    Union Pacific Modelers...

Those three are all one locomotive! UP's last turbine, coal-fired this time. Front unit a rebuilt PA, still with its prime mover. Second unit is the turbine loco itself, built on the frame of a retired GN electric, B-D-D-B wheel arrangement. And a steam tender. Short-lived and unsuccessful.

    Looks familiar?

The color separation also reminds me of BN SD70MACs. Soo had nothing like this. Being reminiscent of several real railroads isn't a bad thing. It makes it realistic, as railroads tend to use familiar paint scheme elements.

5288 doesn't look CP now, but maybe CN?

I meant the one in the last picture, not 610 or 4501 (?) Its number looks like 52xx.

EDIT: I guess I'm going for all of them. Conrail (especially early years, also last years) PRR (transition years) CN (70s-80s eastern, specifically including Newfoundland) Next few are hard to sort: Santa Fe (70s, also Super Fleet years) BN (70s) UP (transition years to early 80s) SP...

Post "Current Shots" of Fallen Flag Freight HERE:

But in each case, the second road wasn't yet "fallen" when the shot was taken. Even for 1990, the Rock box still looks pretty good. I never noticed that those cars had a small CNW emblem.

Minimum curve & helix size in N scale

Err... you just made an error there. The rise is 2", not 12", so in that case the grade would be 2.65%. Fairly steep, but well within sanity. And in a 24" wide space, the largest you can fit will be about 11" radius. And remember that the whole grade being on a curve will add friction. In...

    On Track, with Deano

But not the big centercabs. The ELS, last I heard, only has one switcher in regular use. SMS has a number of switchers and one AS-616. Incidentally, I haven't seen any new photos of their fleet in the past year.

    Interesting reading

Exactly. Such dual-mode engines - I don't consider them at all the same thing as a hybrid like a GG20B - are generally for third rail. 600-700VDC can supply traction motors directly, so the equipment for electric running can be simple and lightweight. An electric for high-voltage AC catenary...

Is the steamer with the Elesco ex-CP? Can't make out its number, but it has something of a CP look.

Not as long as you standardize electrification system, and a de facto standard exists. Or actually, as that article notes, two. 50 kV is rare, but I can see it being widely used in future. If both systems come into mainline use, I expect dual-voltage electrics to appear for run-through and pool...

Always loved those DEEX trains - practically a celebration of circa-1970 power.

Oddly enough, SP used mainly oil-fired steam... except in Texas. I think when he said "coal to oil" he meant steam to diesel.

    The joys of prototype freelancing!

The M420R and the real GP38-2W had 4-window Canadian safety cabs. This GP38-2W has a 3-window early US EMD safety cab. Weren't the first CP SD40-2Fs delivered in 1988? Unfortunately, the JPEG artifacting in your photos is so severe that I can't make out what production phase the GP38-2 is...

An IC Mogul... is that one of the ones that went to Bevier & Southern? And whose is that 2-10-2? Can't make out a roadname, but the tender reminds me of some KCS power.

    CSX Action In Marion(Oh)

It isn't a GP30 anymore. Look closer at how many fans, louvers and doors aren't there. (Okay, those may be hard to see. Try looking at the ex-GP35 2321 which is in the same condition.) It's a road slug. Among the Class 1s, only BNSF has powered GP30s left, and I don't think any of them still...
