    Hand-laying turnouts

Matt, I use both basswood (NOT balsa--there's a big difference) from craft stores (Michael's, Hobby Lobby) and, because I work in On30, I also use wooden coffee stirrers, which is a LOT cheaper. And, yes, you can strip the rail out of old flextrack and use that. I'm doing just that. PCB ties...

What are the look alikes of the Bachmann GP50(high hood)?

Sure, if they know nothing, they might be "fooled." But the two aren't even close to looking alike to anyone who has even a basic knowledge about locomotives

    Blue Foam as Roadbed?

Actually, unsplit N-scale cork is, in my experience, exactly the width of HO scale ties. Convenient, no?

model railroader 2005 carolina central article

The law doesn't differentiate between copies given away and copies sold. You're still violating the law, even if you give the copy away.

what do non railroaders think of your layout?

Followed by, "How much did it cost?" and "How fast can they go?"

    live by train tracks?

Jake: "How often does the train go by?" Elwood: "So often, you won't even notice it."

    stupi question???

"Someone" didn't really give you good advice. If the cars aren't derailing, then remember: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

    stupi question???

Adding weight is not the right solution to a derailing problem, in most cases. What kind of cars? Where do they derail? All the time? Some details will help solve the problem.

    spackle ground contours?

I prefer Scuplatmold for creating ground contours.

    Blue Foam as Roadbed?

Unfortunately, it is much harder to find in warm climates like yours than where it gets cold. We can get it everywhere, including HD and Lowe's. You might try Googling "Dow" or "Dow-Corning insulation dealer" or something like that.

MR cover that got me serious about N-scale

Absolutely. I still refer back to those editions of MR and canceled my subscription after several decades because the magazine has decided that model railroading consists of ready-to-run trains running on EZ-Track on top of a Woodland Scenics grassmat.

MR cover that got me serious about N-scale

Look, you don't have to be so insulting, just because the product wasn't what you expected. Oh. Never mind.

    LHS Customer Review

Not always, and I don't always spend a lot when I am there to buy. I am suprised, though, at how many people are willing to read your comments and immediately dismiss the store as being customer unfriendly, despite the good experiences I (and others) related.

    LHS Customer Review

I live in Denver and have been to Caboose Hobbies many times. I have never experienced the treatment you describe. The staff has been uniformly helpful, willing to root around in "The Back" for merchandise, and ready to point out anything I've been unable to find, even if I did not ask for...

"Live blogging" aboard the California Zephyr

I'm going to be trying an experiment in technology and rail travel this weekend, July 1st: I will be "live blogging" a trip aboard the Amtrak California Zephyr as I ride between Denver and San Francisco. For the 30-odd hours of the run, I will post updates and photos from onboard. I'll be...

    cheap ballast

Paver sand. Sift it and you get mostly fine stuff that makes good ballast and also coarser stuff that can be used as talus. $3.50 for a 50# bag at Lowe's or HD. WS ballast is ground walnut shells. I dislike it. However, when I use "real" ballast, I have found Highball brand to be very good.

    Silver Moon Express

Y'all must have gotten a bad one. My copy of that Silver Moon loco (from eBay, I didn't buy the whole set), pulls three passenger cars up a 2.5% grade just fine, no alterations required.

    Hawthorne Village Collectible Trains

The Hawthorne Village On30 trains are very nice, well-crafted scale models and good runners; that's because they are simply the Bachmann Spectrum line in special paint schemes (and at a premium price). I've heard very few people complain about this product line, and I have an entire layout full...

    Hawthorne Village Collectible Trains

You're not kidding about On30 addiction! I planned an HO scale Atlantic Coast Line layout for ten years, and when I finally got a big enough basement with a house on top of it, my mother-in-law gave me a Hawthorne Village collectible set. She didn't care that it was On30--she liked how it...
