Newly painted and Weathered Locomotive... "Fantasy" Scheme

I think that assigning 'fantasy' liveries can be lots of fun. I've seen some photos in the British (model) railway press of classic steam locos virtually (i.e. through some digital manipulation) painted in flashy modern liveries of the current operating companies. There's even been photos of...

Thinking Of Converting To N Gauge

announce1 Precision Craft Models do make early diesels (EMD E7 PA1) with onboard sound in N Scale. The sound works in DC and DCC, though you need DCC or a special add-on controller to use some of the sounds (diesel horn, brakes etc).

    grrr knuckel couplers

Assuming the knuckle couplers are all microtrains (as opposed to mixed with Accumate etc), is there a difference when the train goes through a straight rather than a curved section? Are the couplers body- or truck mounted? To get cars to couple by pushing them together works better on the...

    uncoupling problem

I wonder if it's anything to do with whether the couplers are body-mounted or not?

Don't know which decoder for this MP-15DC loco

Who's the maker? If I recall there are two different makers of this loco (?) I'd contact the maker - many are pretty prompt about replies and have contact email addresses on their websites. Try googling the maker's name to get the website.

    Special Day Modeling

I remember reading about this topic years ago in one of the railway magazines, and wonder if any gauge members have tried to do it. The premise is that one takes a special year and day (e.g your birthday, or wedding day etc) and a special place (where you got married, your favorite railfanning...

    Terrorism on the rails.

I think that if the Moderators are going to tell us not to include non-raliway matters in our messages they should in all fairness stop people including non-railway matters in their signatures!!:curse:

    track

I use Atlas 55 - Peco 55 is based on UK prototypes, so doesn't look quite right for US (esp turnouts). There are problems with bigger flanged wheels from older stock, but it's not too difficult to change wheels. I think it looks good, and have not had the problems with turnouts that others have...

But ... err... Tower 55 is all HO scale. Isn't this the N/Z forum?

OK, who makes a better engine?

I have experieince of Atlas and Kato engines and found both very reliable. Other good engines are Intermountain (mostly), and Precision craft. People have mixed feelings on LifeLike but their latest stuff isn't bad.

    Bachmann Ez-track?

Well yes, if it's Code 80. If you use Code 55 it's a bit more tricky, as Peco Code 55 is a hybrid - more or less looks 55 but is in fact about 80 with the bottom part of the rail buried in the base. So, it doesn't join to Atlas 55 without an adaptor.:curse:

    Layout in a unheated/cooled garage

 Does the tomcat ever decide to sit on your favorite building? They do have tendency to do things like that!:D

Can't decide, but leaning toward N scale

Kalmbach have a couple of intros to N Scale (the people who publish MR), but they're somewhat out of date now, and rather superficial. I'd also welcome any suggestions as to a good intor book!

    SDP45 in N?

Thanks Herc for the websites with the pictures (good lookin' beasts ain't they?*), and you and Triplex for the advice. Food for thought. I have also contacted Intermountain to see if they may one day bring out this version. If they say anything useful I'll post. *To be read with a Lord Peter...
