I hate it when I get the dimensions wrong!

Maybe not a mountain, but buildings that are different on each side so that it looks like some other industry. Even for warehouses, you could make a brick building along one track and a glass and concrete one on the other. Or aluminum pre-fab.

    Does this make sense?

I've never had much success with the skewers from above so I pull the gladhands over with them. There's the question of what's more unrealistic: the magnet or the big hand.

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] - Part VII

Tiring day. The guys were back today to remove more of the chimney. Some thing happend to the foundation and the chimney has been moving away from the house -- looks like a detail part that was stuck on with rubber cement. Then we started on the Christmas decorations. Dayle began by dropping her...

Just imagine mailing your Lionel Hudson back for service that way.

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] - Part VII

I saw a Blue police call box in OO scale in Hornby's Skaledale range on the weekend. It was agreed that it would be suitable for all railway eras. I don't know i thy have one in N but I'm certain they don't do O.

More Progress at Toronto's John Street Roundhouse

6213 was installed at the CNE in 1960 and has never been moved, to my knowledge. I went down one night to see it go in. It was being pulled by some sort of tractor and they were using snap-track sections to take it down the roads. I assume i started at one of the sidings behind the horse palace.

    RPO pick-up

Nice shot! you caught it right after the bag snatch. Operational comments: The bag holder (land side) was rotatable. The mail pouch was installed on it while it was turned sideways to the track so it was out of the way of any other trains. When the mail train approached it was swung into...

    Whitby Train Show this weekend

Brampton show CNTown: The show was held for years in Orangeville Collegiate. I think they started in a shopping mall. They went to the Orangeville convention centre (which noone in Oville knew of) and then to Brampton fairgrounds. I think the last 2 moves were due to rents.

Some Union Station / Via Track Side Photos.

You have some good detail shots of the slip switches there. The heaters and the switch motors show up well. I hope they get the graffiti scrubbed off that loco soon. When I was going through there every day I could see a lot of the switches were pumping mud in wet weather. I hope this ballast...

    Steel Benchwork

I operate on a friend's layout, Lostock Junction. http://www.theplatelayers.org/coupling/lostock.htm Mike rebuilt a lot of his layout with steel studs when it began sagging. He also uses them for cassettes to take trains off the layout and store them. (I thought there were better pictures on...

    Whitby Train Show this weekend

The Brampton show (which is organised by a group from Orangeville!) was subjected to a reorganisation over the last 2 years -- the club that used to run it disbanded or split up or something. The location suffers from being about/over 2 miles from the nearest housing, out in farm country with no...

    Rivet Punch Question

50 years ago, Model Railroader commented that while some details were too small to be modelled in scale (I think they were talking brake wheels), they were too prominent to be left off. Most scale rivets are probably less than the thickness of the layer of paint over them. They become noticeable...

    Oops!

Most automatic signalling systems put a small current in the rails. When this is shorted out (by a train) the signals go to danger. If a rail breaks that also interrupts the circuit and the signal goes red. The crew that sits at an unexpected red signal will contact the dispatcher who may...

dcc help for very new modeler

As one who has used neither, I always suggest using a DCC system that you can get local support for. Your hobby shop may prefer one or the other, or the local club may use one. Or you may like one controller better than the other; they're like TV remote controls (do you find yourself changing...

    Multimeter testing

Herc: one approach might be to measure the voltage coming out of the power pack and again at the rails. (same setting of power pack). If there's a drop of a volt or more (in a reasonably short distance) you may have a problem. You might need a small consistent load like a lamp. Another trick...

    Whitby Train Show this weekend

I may make the Whitby show -- my sister and father live there -- if my little flu clears up. Tetters: I've volunteered to work the Platelayers booth both days at the Xmas show. Drop by and watch me glue bits of cardboard together.

A Problem That is Becoming Magnified

I forgot: the more powerful the magnifier, the closer you have to hold the work. If you leave the lenses on, you can end up waving glue bushes and soldering irons just beyond the end of your nose. Did I mention that the magnifying lenses don't work with my reading glasses? My dentist has a pair...

    Help with passanger train arrangement

There were no trains running all the way across. Sometimes one car would be switched in Chicago, but everyone else changed trains. ("A hog can cross the country without changing trains, but you can't.") Most transcontinental trips changed in Chicago, but there were some that switched in the...

A Problem That is Becoming Magnified

I had cataract surgery in only one eye -- after a retina detachment. I now have the most mismatched pair of eyes you could find. I didn't get perfect vision in the replacement, and there's a second problem. I have a set of graduated bifocals for normal wear. They are useless for most closeup...

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Rob: CN Northerns are among the smallest 4-8-4s, so bashing anything else into one is not a happy job.
