    Fishing boat

How old fashioned? Sylvan Scale Models has some rowboats and canoes, I think. or were you thinking of Ocean Fishing, to supply the Flying Kipper?

    tortoise

I have a pair of Tortoises. I use DPDT switches powered through a rectifier and tapped from the Lionel transformer that powers one of my throttles. I used the wire that came with the machine for the points -- Peco but with the Peco spring removed. I used fairly light wire on the individual...

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] - Part VII

Thank you Marcie. Today was Christmas cleanup day, although my family think they should stay up until 12th Night. Dayle's diary says that last year we took down and did a housecleaning as well. Polar Express is downstairs but not yet re-boxed.

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] - Part VII

Marcie: was it you who told us about the Wales West campground? Did you go there? And can you suggest a camp halfway between Orlando and Mobile?

    L-Girder Benchwork

L-girder is much more forgiving of bad carpentry and easier to modify when your switch machine comes out over a joist.

    first attempt at weathering!

I think the exhaust fans look OK. The one end of the roof, though, looks as if it's been through the woods on its side. You probably need a good photo to work from. Passenger cars were sent through the car washers regularly, so the sides tended to be clean but with the paint washed out. The...

    placing figures

I use Woodland Scenics Accent Glue. But I find that this glue is stronger than a lot of the glue holding down my scenery and stronger than the paint on my platforms. My various animals have bits of ground foam or other material stuck to their hooves.

    L-Girder Benchwork

I used 1x3+1x3 Ls. I have a lot more support under the girders than most because it's on a set of shelves. I use the 1x3 flange because I can't drill holes any closer. I have a lot of different lumber for the joists -- much of it 3/4"x1/2" or so, but all sorts of other things as it rises. I'm a...

Need Help make my track plan

Kent: In Toronto we used to have a reverse loop that ran around the roundhouse and coach yard. The entire consist of the Canadian was turned on that. Since that facility was destroyed they have used a wye at the coach yard a dozen miles west. I know some observation cars were turned on...

Could it be a misreading of HO gauge? Never heard of 110 gauge.

    New to the hobby

Hi and welcome to the hobby. Tools are discussed here: http://www.zealot.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115134&highlight=Tool+lists and probably other places. What you need depends on what you are doing. Small screwdriver set, Xacto knife set (not the woodcarving blades), needle-nose pliers...

    15" radius question

You might find a tight-radius switch in a box of old track. I think Fleischman made them and possibly Hornby-Dublo. But these go back to the 60s and the flangeways are probably a bit wide.

Come on back to the caboose and get a cup of coffee [or sweet ice tea] - Part VII

We started the day going to Trains on Brant at their new new location in Burlington (not on Brant St.) Their new location is bright and clean and spacious. Dayle found what she wanted - the Polar Express car with announcements. The shop was having a varied sale all day -- when we were there it...

Track planning using prototype track charts?

A correction to my post. Mike tells me that his model of Windermere is as close to scale size as he could make it. He may have compromised to use Peco turnouts, but the length is prototype, in a 22' room. The model of the rest of England, in the other room, is not to scale.

    Newbie -- model builder program

Yes, the worst part of card modelling is wearing out the end 1/8" of millions of Xacto blades. When 2 strokes don't go through the cardboard, you're near the end. If 3 strokes don't do it, get a new blade and give the old one to your doctor. I demo building card kits at railway shows.

    Roadbed in the Yards?

While there may be less ballast in the yard, the elevation may depend on the original terrain. In Brampton there is a siding parallel to the main track that feeds a bunch of spurs. This track goes up and down as they did less grading than on the flat main line. You could mak a yard highe than...

    Here I go

N scale fits better in the Xmas stocking. For a given size of layout, N scale needs more rolling stock, so is more expensive per square foot. N scale manufacturers make a lot more collectible series of cars.
