Kudos to RMJ & Carstens Publishing

I don't subscribe to either mag, but I picked up the December issue of RMC at the hobby shop a couple of days ago. I don't normally read Hal Carstens editorials in the front of the mag, but I did read it this time. At the end of the column Hal mentions that the publisher of Rail Model Journal...

    Submitting to MR and MRC?

soat204, Don't worry about another club having a larger layout than yours, or about animation. Animation does not show up in still photography, and the magazines are publishing "tight" shots of individual scenes, not over views of layouts where square footage gets more "points." Josh, I don't...

    Lights Lights Lights

I kind of included an answer to this question on your thread about your new camera. Don't bother with tubes. You want some flood lights for picture taking. Portable is best so that you can put the light where you want it. You need additional lights to provide fill lighting to eliminate...

    Camera Practice

Even if your camera doesn't have a specific "aperture priority mode", if you can set the f stop it will do aperture priority. The thing to remember is that the higher the f stop number, the smaller the aperture, the better the depth of field will be. For lighting, get some inexpensive flood...

    Submitting to MR and MRC?

You can find the editorial staff all named on the page listing editors and advertising execs. probably one or two pages past the table of contents in the magazine you are interested in submitting to. If you submit and are rejected, ask them for a clarification of ownership of the manuscript...

    Accidental find

I think "Tootsietoys" were made in the UK and were a popular line of small vehicles, mostly trucks and cars, but I guess trains also. I think when Mattel came out with the "Matchbox" series of race car sets, they pretty much took over the Tootsietoy market.

Real Bullet Trains to come to America

The ink is hardly dry on the election certification and already there is talk of some of the approved high speed rail funding being diverted to freight railroads!

    22 gauge wire

Are you doing dc or dcc? In dc the telephone wire will work, but for dcc you need a larger gauge. I'm not sure, but I think 2 strands of telephone wire would be as good as a 22 ga wire, but it might be more bulky particularly where it is soldered to the rail.

    new boy aroud + question

I think it would be the last thing you would want to do scenery wise on a layout. Not in the sense that you wouldn't want to use them, but in the sense that they would be something of a hazard to work around if you install them before the rest of the scenery is done.

    Submitting to MR and MRC?

Josh, Another possibility doesn't pay anything, but does get you the credit needed for the published author certificate towards the Master Model Railroader award is to submit an article for Scale Rails, the magazine of the NMRA. It used to be little more than a pamphlet with a lot of...

hmas, sorry about the misunderstanding. I see what you meant now.

    Submitting to MR and MRC?

Josh, I would recommend that you just submit part one as a track plan concept. I suspect that if you submit it as a possible 4 part article with parts 2,3,&4 being done as you get modules built, you can expect them to probably reject it without looking at it. The only way to get the 4 part...

    RPO pick-up

I think local mail has suffered since it came off the rails and went to planes. Coast to coast mail is probably faster unless the post office's automated machinery chews up a letter during processing. It might well be faster to send a letter from Los Angeles to New York than it is to send a...

It wouldn't be 1/2 inch scale since he said it is about Z scale which would make it smaller than n-scale.

    Changing decoder address help needed

Stephen, Our club uses E-Z DCC from CVP products. I'm not familiar with digitrax except that when the club was looking into going dcc originally, Digitrax was one of the first systems we eliminated as not having anything adequate for what we wanted to do. There are a lot of folks on this...

    Paul Templar RIP

Even though it has been expected, this is the post I have been dreading since I first heard of his problem with cancer on top of the emphysema. You will be missed, Paul. May God bless you and your family.

    layout "contest"

Galen, are you going to buy a house? Do they have basements in your part of Washington State, or are you going to have to put the layout in the garage? Maybe you ought to look for a house with one or two more bedrooms than you need and claim one for a layout room!

    Am I Crazy?

Something to consider to break things up a bit is to put a cut away building in front somewhere. You basically model 1/2 of a building like a machine shop, packing house, warehouse, etc. and then do a fully detailed interior. Another idea is something Jack Burgess did on his Yosemite Valley...
