I think "Tootsietoys" were made in the UK and were a popular line of small vehicles, mostly trucks and cars, but I guess trains also. I think when Mattel came out with the "Matchbox" series of race car sets, they pretty much took over the Tootsietoy market.

Are you doing dc or dcc? In dc the telephone wire will work, but for dcc you need a larger gauge. I'm not sure, but I think 2 strands of telephone wire would be as good as a 22 ga wire, but it might be more bulky particularly where it is soldered to the rail.

I think it would be the last thing you would want to do scenery wise on a layout. Not in the sense that you wouldn't want to use them, but in the sense that they would be something of a hazard to work around if you install them before the rest of the scenery is done.
