It can be done with Atlas track, but I don't like the result as much. Peco turnouts are constant radius, while Atlas are fixed frog angle. The Pecos make for nicer trackwork in small spaces.

Larry, I don't know if I asked this before - what type of track were you planning on using? I've been using Peco Code 80 turnouts and such for this so far.... if you were planning on using Atlas, I should re-tool the thing so it's correct.

Sheesh! The guy hand-lays one double-slip switch, and starts seeing a need for them everywhere! :p :D Thanks! I'm having fun too! This is one of the parts of the hobby I enjoy the most.

    Who wood'da thunk

Joe, Is 3x8 the total available space, or how much you're willing to build? Is it on a wall, in a corner or an alcove? What I'm getting at here is how many sides will you be able to easily access? Also, what is your layout building experience? Will this be your first?

Larry, Something like this? Of course now with such long tracks, any moves in the elevator are going to foul the main... do we need a lead up there too?

Larry, I'm reminded of the old SNL skit, the "Lowered Expectations Dating Service". :) Keep in mind that a 50' covered hopper is about 4.5" in N-scale. To get your 8-car track for the silos, you're looking at 3' of track. That's a lot of track on an 80" door! I put 10 cars on the top spurs...

Good point. I guess it depends on what's going on the two tracks "east" of the elevator spurs. If they can be shorter, I can skootch everything east a bit and lengthen the elevator spurs.

Actually, if you like you can post it here. I lobbied the management to allow xtc and rts files to be added as attachments. ... unless you don't want to share...

Joe, Start a new thread with your "Givens & Druthers" (if you haven't already), and I'll see what I can come up with!

OK Larry, *edit* Larry. LARRY! Brakie's name is Larry. Not Gus. Sorry about that! Here's the latest version. I re-arranged the sidings for the elevator so that you can get 2 50' hoppers in each, and spaced them so the elevator shed isn't quite so crowded. I can re-position the...

I hate it when I get the dimensions wrong!

You're joking, right? You have seen what other people try to shoe-horn into a given space? Well, no and yes... it's only one yard :p , but there is supposed to be one industry per siding. That's how I'd do it, but only if I could get around the entire layout... or at least 3 sides of it...

Tetter's Layout Progress and Other Pics.

Tetters, Could you post your current track plan as an .XTC file? That way I could play with it and see what I can do in that space. Not that what you have done is wrong, or anything... I just like to monkey around.

All the turnouts are Peco mediums, minimum radius is 11", and that is a 25' crossing.

Tetters, Welcome to the wonderful world of "I can make that better" model railroading... or "Good just isn't good enough"! I think most MRRers get this bug. Homasote is great for handlaying, but as the website you listed says, it makes a LOT of dust. Don't rip it or kerf it in your basement...

Here's a more modern auto-box. CN Car-Go-Rail 57' box 720028. These ran on the SuperContinental between Toronto and Edmonton in the '60s. By the 1970's a bunch of these cars were sold to the AutoTrain.

This was sitting in my friend's engine track!

The LRC cars had a tilt system to allow them to track curves at high speeds, and keep the passengers comfortable. They could never get it to work, and so was locked very early on in their career. They're not bad cars, but they've got a long way to go to match the longevity of the stainless...
