    Remember Mel Thornburgh ?

I did not know that Mel built models for the museum, I am glad that much of his work still exists. It seems I remember the comments by John Page. I know before I got my Unimat I made many parts in an electric drill, first time I did it I thought I was quite smart -- then I found it was...

    Remember Mel Thornburgh ?

I have the complete set of articles about this loco build ( had to !) & I would be happy to make more copies if you would like to see how he did it & also how well he taught in them. He built several models, I remember one billed on the cover as "Mel builds a 4-4-0 American in...

    Finally fell into something nice

I knew that would happen!! Darn P***$#KS !!! If I remember correctly a while back there was a thread on here about some person having accumlated all of E.L.Moores articles from MRC?. You might want to try to locate that thread & get some copies from him to show the spoilsports just what...

    Remember Mel Thornburgh ?

Oh Yes, one more thing --- Mel soldered with a REAL soldering "iron" --- a big copper thing heated with an old plumbers type white gas torch!! I can't even picture how he could have turned out the wonderous work he did using a clumsy, messy thing like that!!

    Remember Mel Thornburgh ?

Does anybody here remember Mel Thornburgh? In the 40 & 50s he was featured in MR often. Always with a series of articles about scratch building Brass Locos. Mel was an amazing man , his work was impeccable, he made pretty much EVERY part of the loco , except the wheels, gears & motors. He...

Scratch built turn out and the use of PC boards

About 15 years ago-- somewhat before everybody got quite so skittish about being sued for anything you could think of, I bought a bunch of PC board from a scrap metal yard. Casting about for a way to cut the board into ties, I remembered seeing a metal shear in a local radiator shop, it was...

    Rivarossi Disaster!

A Dremel with a few cut off disks & a drill press should be all you need to duplicate it. Sure would be nice to know if he managed to save the loco.

    Rivarossi Disaster!

The article was about a USRA Mikado . It might help him to understand scratch building & working with brass but the frame for the Mikado bears no resemblence to the chassis for his cab- foward. It would be easier to use a piece of flat ground steel guage stock as a starting point to fabricate a...

    Finally fell into something nice

Before anyone busts your bubble about balsa not being as good as bass wood for models , I remember that E.L. Moore used balsa for most, if not all of his work . Have at it --- you got the mother load!!

    Fruit Stand... almost...

When I was looking for the carroway seeds I saw some round seeds , durned if I remember what they were, but a bit of orange & they would be great oranges, red would make them big tomatos. Bet you could find several more "fruits" in your local spice island.

Just got a neat new thing for my Unimat.

I just got a great addition to my Unimat lathe! :thumb: Some outfit on E bay is drilling out 3/8 X24 thread 3/8 in capacity drill chucks to 12 MM X 1 MM threads. Got this one ( brand new chuck too) for 17 $ -- sure beats paying over 30$ for a large drill bit with a 1/4 in. shank. 3/8 shank...

    Shay Demo Train.

Here are pics of two of the 3 MDC Shay cars. I only recently found the box car on E bay . Now I guess a little photocopy work will give me logos & copy to make a cabbose. What do you think --a bobber? Yes , I know one car is missing an end rail & one is short a coupler. One day I will get "A...

    Shay Demo Train.

In another thread about a scratch built B&O tender I mentioned a 4 truck flat car I built to carry a shay on trips around the country to demonstrate it. Seemed like a logical thing for Lima to do, considering how slow they were. I got the idea when MDC came out with the set of 3 ( I think) Shay...

    Another scratched tender.

Never having seen an Athearn 4 truck setup I have no idea if what I did is mearly a copy of it or not. I'll put up a thread showing it under Shay Demo Train. It seems to me that rather than adding a third truck to the tender as was mentioned , it would have made more sense for the B&O...
