    My Layout in Fort Dodge

On the inner main the minimum radius is about 26" give or take a half inch or so. It's one of those things where whatever the curve ended up being after aligning the bridge is what it was. In the same place the minimum on the outer main is probably 28" or 29" I didn't want to go less than...

    My Layout in Fort Dodge

The industrial area is designed so i can split it in half. And it's been fitted with dowel rods so i can mate it up exactly how it is right now. I've been keeping the tear down in mind when placing turnouts and curves so i can just cut the rails unscrew and go.

    My Layout in Fort Dodge

So it's been a while since I've posted pics on this thread. I realized that it's been about a year, in fact. Well here's the latest... This shows where I had to move a support out so I could mount a switch machine or two under the turnouts. That's it for now. I'll post...

    favorite tool?

I would have to say my favorite tool would be my needle nose pliers. I have 3 of them in fact. They are quite handy. A close second for me would be my adjustable wire stripper. I use it for cutting anything other than pianowire. They're like a pair of dikes for me. I've even used them to...

    Power District Layout Question, DCC

On my layout I plan to isolate each main line into its own power district as well as my industrial area. More specifically I have a Digitrax Zephyr and each district will be separated by a circuit breaker which will indicate a short with an LED on the circuit board. Tony's Trains has multiple...

simple wiring for swinging door entry

I love the contacts idea!!! Its a simple way to drop the power when the door is open instead of a switch. "solid state" if you will.

    mostly off topic-electric bill

I hated the CFLs when they first came out because they were the florescent blue light and I'll take an incandescent anyday over that. But then they came out with that more incandescent hue called "soft white" and my living room and bedroom lamps have those CFLs in them. I haven't noticed any...

    The narrow gauges of Colorado

My dad has a brass On30 (i believe) 2-6-6-2 so I think he has some interest in the railroad. He probably drove on the old railroad grade himself in his bachelor days. Uintah Dave - Take a look at my birthday on my profile, you may find it as interesting as I did. Jake

    Help with lift bridge

I have a swing bridge in my doorway and what I have done on my joints is use re-railers. I also have it cut at an angle (mainly for the swing bridge function) which helps on conductivity. I have pictures on my layout page if you search for "fort dodge layout" otherwise i'll edit in the link...

    New Gal

I would also recommend finding a model railroad club in your area if there is one and checking it out if not joining it. It is a great way to stay motivated as well as a good way to get hands on experience/training. Jake

    How To Use Flextrack

I've been taught that you solder the two pieces of flex track while its straight otherwise you will get kinked rail joints. I have also seen where people offset the rails enough so you don't need to solder them. IMHO, I don't agree with doing this because soldering has always worked for...

Weekly Foto Phun Week of Nov. 2 2007

Yeah that wasn't a bad ride! I think that was one of the longer ones I've been on. The first one I had ever been on was a small loop at a thrashing show when i was little and the guy would go around 2 or 3 times. Too bad you didn't make it out there. Jake

installing decoders with double sided tape

I would say that the only decoder that you could use double sided tape on is the ones that are already wrapped with heatshrink.

Shows scheduled for the Phoenix area

Well I didn't end up leaving empty handed. I picked up an $18 Athearn PS2 Cement hopper for $10 and an SP GSC Flat for $5 bucks from one guy. Also some neon signs a guy was selling b/c I thought it would be neat to have and some guys from the N-trak club I got 4 cars for $9 and had a nice chat...

    Dirty track and YOU

When setting up with any N-trakers out there we've always run the bright-boy around the modules before we run anything right after setup. At the club I was in, in Florida we pretty much had to clean our locomotives wheels every other time we ran our trains around. I assume we always had to...
