    Workin' the yard

Thanks Ralph and Glen. Ralph, the backdrop was very easy to do following Gavin Miller's cloud tutorial here: http://forum.zealot.com/t96115/ If anyone wants to get nice summer-y looking clouds, I highly reccommend Gavin's stencil method. It's easy and very effective! Val

Weekly Photo Phun Week of Nov. 9

Ralph, the way you've modelled your steel mill really makes it look like part of a much bigger facility, and I really like the crane!! :thumb: For my contribution i decided to take stroll downtown. Hope u like. :) Val

    Next Presidents Choice Train Set?

Aww, that would be sad - I hope it's not true. Although I know they haven't been selling as well as when they first came out. Edit: Andrew, the set I bought a few years ago was made in the Czech Republic. Val

Fun day out with Dr Wayne (pic heavy)

Except I don't think you would want to put your uncoupling magnet in quite that position!! I've found some magnets that go right under the ties, and can be ballasted over. IMO that's the way to go. Val

Fun day out with Dr Wayne (pic heavy)

Hi David No I have not toured the steel mill, although Wayne did mention that there are tours. Apparently you can't take photo's on the tour, but it would be pretty interesting. The Rapido coach does just fit with my layout, but I'm hoping they will also make some heavyweights at some point...

Fun day out with Dr Wayne (pic heavy)

Thanks folks - I'm glad you liked the little virtual tour. Gary - that's a great idea :D Ralph, if you still need steel mill reference shots, let me know - I have more. Val

Fun day out with Dr Wayne (pic heavy)

The good doctor and I have been planning to get together to do a little railfanning and maybe poke around some of the old industrial areas in his neck of the woods for some time now. Hamilton, where Wayne lives is home to big steel so we met on the outskirts. I'll just skip the part of the...

    Workin' the yard

Thanks folks! Wayne, I am still playing around with backdrop building positions, so that one may end up there or somewhere else. Val

    Workin' the yard

Hi folks, I've made some more progress on my layout. Here's CP 6516 pulling a cut of cars at Parkdale Yard in Toronto. The switchstands are from Details West. The second pic shows some of the tank cars that are waiting on track 1.

Why don't you participate in our photo contests?

Brakie, as you know if you're planning to enter a slot car race, you're going to get the best slot car you can. Same thing applies to a photo contest. It all comes down to priorities. If you want sharp, detailed photos, then you'll invest in a decent camera. We already have weekly photo fun...

    Model train show

Hey there Chris - glad to see you back! I'm going to try to make it to Whitby (Bowmanville is a bit too far). Have a great time this weekend and hope to catch up with you soon! Val

    Next Presidents Choice Train Set?

It's going to be a CNR streamlined Northern with sound and DCC plus 5 passenger cars for $100. Just kidding!!! My imagination suddenly got out of hand! :D :D Val

    Sidewalks?

If you're going to use joint compound be sure to get the plaster-based stuff and NOT spackle. Spackle sands well but does not carve well, as it seems to be polymer-based, so carving lines and cracks into it does not work as well as real drywall mud. As for me, I'm lazy so I just use plastic...

Why don't you participate in our photo contests?

Good points Brian. Referring back to that military forum I mentioned, although they do have actual prizes, which I don't think we should do for many reasons, they also have banners - kind of like prize ribbons that go under your sig. Designed and placed there by the forum admins for all to see...

Why don't you participate in our photo contests?

I did not vote because my reasons are not listed. But here's my view for what it's worth. I think there are too many contests. Having a contest should be special, there should be time to work on things, and it should not happen every month or so. With so many, I think contest fatigue sets in...

Thanks Gary, Kevin and Glen! I've set this project aside for the time being since my Walther's modulars arrived to allow me to complete another in-progress building. Val

Remember That 1/6th Scale German Railroad?

That's the same group that has the original 1/6 model RR. The owner's name is Peter Shaw and Kampfgruppe von Abt is the name of the group that he belongs to in England. That's the most impressive model I've ever seen!! Val
