    Turning Diesels?

I've seen it done with wyes and reversing loops.. There is a photo floating around here somewhere where Southern Pacific used a reversing loop to turn an entire train at one of its yards (near Tehachapi? I don't remember for sure)... I've seen VIA Rail use a wye to turn its passenger...

    Painting Boxcars- Spraypaint or Brush?

I have to admit I am not skilled enough to brush-paint a model. I tried before, and I always leave a mess of brush marks, uneven layers, and thick coats that obscure molded-on detail. That's why I airbrush.. I find an airbrush gives me more control over the thickness of the layer of paint I...

Final result of caulking fun - test photo shoot

Heya Hercdriver and Berraf, Thanks for the kind words! The station platforms were castings of dental stone (the really hard plaster dentists use to make models of teeth from the impressions they take). The top of the platforms were covered with very fine-grained joint compound to give it that...

Final result of caulking fun - test photo shoot

Hiscopilot, Combat and Wayne, Thanks for the kind words! With all of your encouragement I hope to make the module look better in the near future.. Still got the station to build (right now I just have the bare platform), plus a backdrop so you guys don't see the rest of my den in the...

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

Heya Rick, After the latex caulking set, if I want to pull up the track to re-do it, I would have to use a putty knife. That's pretty darn strong, and I think it will have absolutely no problems holding flex track curves in place. :thumb: The key is to hold the flex-track in place...

Green: Man, up to until two weeks ago, Toy Train Heaven was selling Blue-Box AMD103 kits (Powered!) for just $23 apiece! I grabbed 3 of them over Christmas vacation to do a P32AC-DM kitbash, and I'm glad I did, because now they are nowhere to be found. :( Toy Train Heaven still has a Metro...

    Who Are The Mechanics Here?

Hey Green, LOL, in my case it was an instance in being penny-wise and pound-foolish.. Back then, I had a choice between getting that HO-scale Botchmann train set with the E60CP loco and 3 Amfleet cars, complete with an oval of brass track (wow! NOT! :D ) and a power pack.. Versus spending...

    Starting my layout!

Easiest solution... Use manual ground throws for the turnouts closest to the edge. The thing with that layout plan is that the outside oval only has turnouts on one side of the layout, so you can put that side closest to you so you can manually flip them. Plus it saves you $$$. Simple...

    Intoduction and First layout

Heya Amrap1, I think in the Weathering forum, Trucklover posted a thread about weathering his cement plant (which would be similar to your gravel/ballast plant I think!) Check it out and I think it will give you some good ideas on how to weather your structure. I think you are indeed quite an...

Final result of caulking fun - test photo shoot

Heya TrainSteve, I laid down the cork roadbed, track and roadbed before I did the ground cover.. No reason why you can't do the ground cover first, I guess. You would probably want to be a bit more careful if your ground cover is already applied though.. A stray glob of caulking splattering...

Final result of caulking fun - test photo shoot

Thanks for the kind words Ralph! Say, your posting here reminds me I gotta get some Penn Central stuff.. I got Conrail stuff, I got NYC stuff, I got Pennsy stuff... But no PC locos or rolling stock (which would be appropriate for the region I model). :D Hmm.. Maybe later on in the year...

    Finding a Ghost

I remember in your other thread you were looking for Chessie rolling stock in HO.. Thought you'd get a kick out of the Chessie stuff I have on my roster.. Both the SW and the caboose are 20-year-old Athearn blue-box kits and they run as nice as the day I got them. Figure they got another 30...

Affixing ballast & Track - Fun with Latex caulk

Heya Gary, Yep this method should work very well with turnouts precisely because you can control where the caulking goes-- With Elmers/Wet Water, you can't really control where that stuff will spread due to the detergent! :D I think you will probably want to spread the caulking very thin on...

    Seen this engine before

Yea.. Among other things it was also sold as the Tyco Chattanooga Choo-Choo with a different paint job if I remember right. Those Tyco locos with the pancake motor drive in the tender are notoriously unreliable... Ray Marinaccio did a Jesus and resurrected one in this thread here...
