    Steam loco power trucks

I want to scratch build some of the early experimental steam locos. Is there anywhere that I can find power trucks like are used to scratch diesels but for steam locos? Ho or On30 Love some of those Gymongus drivers on the early ones.:)

    Power for camera from track

The capacitor will smooth out the variations(ripple) from the output of the rectifier. I would suggest that you ad a small choke to the output. It will clean up the voltage even more. You can make your own small choke by wrapping as many turns of small wire around a toroid core as you can, or...

Ok, thinking of a harbor deal, but....

Don't forget tug and barge operations. They are much smaller and take up much less room. Steam tugs were moving all kinds of frieght quite some time before powered ships were, and still do today. Just make the barge out of wood and you have the type for that time period. The tug would be single...

    Cutting cars down to size

Using a helper is what I'm doing now. I need to get another 2-6-0 mogul for doing that. I'm using one of the Shays right now. Tried using the Porter, but it will barely pull itself up the grade. I would still like to know about cutting the cars down. I think they would look better on my layout...

    Camera mounted on train

I've got one of the Radio Shack wireless security cameras in a gondola. The camera is about the size of a quarter. It's color, no sound, doesn't seem to effect the gondola at all. Video is pretty good too. It's a trip driving the train as a little person! 9volt battery lasts about four hours.

    Cutting cars down to size

Will To change the hieght would mean ripping out most of the scenery and starting again. Raising the layout would also require much more massive supports under the layout. It has to be strong enough to withstand the forces generated when driving. As it is now, it is cradled just inside the top...

    Cutting cars down to size

Hadn't thought of removing the interiors. Daaaah! Those cars have to wiegh more than 3 or 4 regular cars. I would prefer not to have that steep of grade, but don't have any choice. I'm having to climb alot in 6' to get high enough to get over my computer desk. Not a lot of room to play with in...

    Cutting cars down to size

I've read about people narrowing and shortening cars to make them smaller. My question is, how do you cut them to shorten them? I have the Spectrum On30 passenger cars. They are longer and heavier than I would like for my layout. I have a 6.5% grade that I would like to be able to get up with...

    Linking pictures

You can use image and fax viewer in XP to reduce image size. Look for the size and skew option.

    New lighting trick!

Try grabbing an undischarged color TV picture tube. 37K. It'll knock your shorts off! Used to work in a TV shop as a kid. Got hit several times before I got gunshy enough to make sure they were discharged before picking them up. Seems like I wasn't too sharp as a kid....daah!

How do I re-letter my Locos

Oh, a note about the pinstriping tape. It sticks feroiusly as it comes off the roll. It will lift any new paint. I run my fingers back and forth over the tape a few times to kill most of the stickem so it won't lift the paint. Remove the tape as soon as you have the transfers done. Another tape...

How do I re-letter my Locos

I ain't no x-purt, but here's how I do it. I go the the LHS and buy a sheet of dry transfers the size I want. After removing any old lettering, clean it good. I use a strip of pin striping tape to mark where the bottom of the lettering goes. Hold the transfer sheet over the loco using the...

    Decisions and Dilemmas...

There ain't nothing that says you can't run whatever you want too on "Your" track. I 've been guilty of having a Ho CSX diesel help my On30 mogul up the 6% grade. What the heck, it's fun to run trains, even if things don't match.! lol You can always blame it on a Dr. Who style time and space...
