Product Review: Bachmann 85' Amfleet Phase IV Coach

Nice unofficial review... The Bachmann cars of this type, going all the way back to their original Metroliners in Penn Central paint (!) tend to have the drag problem that you describe, whether they are lighted or not.

    Fox Valley Models

Have you checked the website? I have not personally used any of their products. The press on them so far as I've seen it has been quite positive. They are doing some new boxcars at reasonable prices, with some tradeoffs. Good reviews on their metal wheels and laser kits. Matt G from FVM...

    Rapido uncoupling ramps

It was B&L, and I remember seeing an auction for several of them on eBay in the last week or so. That auction would be over by now, though. In terms of making your own, to trigger the pin, a shutter release cord that was used for older non-electronic film cameras might work. The release...

    Maximum radius

I did superelevate one curve just for the effect. I glued .010 inch square Evergreen styrene to the outside of the track (19 inch sectional, Atlas Code 80) before laying it. It's not really necessary but I liked it!

    Ready Built Structures

Ouch! I hope that doesn't happen, but please keep us informed... I had a six month "forced vacation" in 2005 and it was no fun at all.

    Introduction - new here

Welcome aboard! I second the motion about Feather River Trains. You have a great store right in your area.

    Ready Built Structures

Atlas has the Kate's Colonial House and the Barb's Bungalow in built form. Woodland Scenics is in process of releasing their "Built and Ready" in N Scale, but no houses yet.

    Best switching engine

Although some folks have had issues with the Atlas VO-1000s, my pair (relettered for my railroad) run just fine. The Life-Like SW8s seems to be good for me as well.

The Ohio Western (First "Real" Layout)

If you do keep the mine, I'd suggest that you not downsize it. One advantage to N Scale is that one can have buildings that should be substantial in real life, like industries and mines. A company town would certainly work next to the mine.

    Starting out in N

There are Bachmann sets available with the Spectrum steam locos as the motive power as well. I believe (though I'm not completely sure) that there is the better "Spectrum" power pack included as well. I don't think that the freight cars match the time period of the steamer, though.

    newbie questions

If I were taking a "do over," I would definitely start out with DCC. Electrofrogs need more care and patience when being put in (mostly the fun of the polarity issues that can result from opposing frogs) but will be worth it in the long run particuarly with switching. Micro-Trains...

    DON'T clean your track!

Another product that has its supporters and detractors-- and not much in between-- is Wahl Hair Clipper Oil. Some swear by it, others at it. My dad and I started using it after our supply of No-Ox dried up (sorry, couldn't resist). There are reports that Hair Clipper Oil adds nasty gunk...

    Life-Like: Good, Bad, or Ugly?

NScaler711, I think you got a bad copy of the SW-8. I just picked up a copy in Lehigh Valley and I'm very pleased with it, particularly the slow speed operation. If the one I got only had the speeds "Stop" and "Fast" (a common complaint on many early N Scale locomotives!) then I would have...

    What's Wrong With This Picture????

Interesting study. I didn't notice the girder bridge until it was pointed out; the first thing I picked up was that there wasn't (yet) any ballast. You're probably right that the bridge is too large for N Scale, but I am pretty sure that the sizes of the girders aren't all the same on the...

The "Green Spike" on the Wilmington...

Thanks all. The hill was done in sections. It's mostly just the one inch "pink foam" Styrofoam turned on its end and coated with whatever plaster I had on hand. I mixed gray acrylic paint (the squeeze bottles available at Michaels and other "big box" craft stores) directly into the plaster...

The "Green Spike" on the Wilmington...

The "Green Spike" was driven last Sunday on the Wilmington and New York. No, I don't refer to an environmental cause-- after all, it is 1963 on the Wilmington and we don't know from this "toxic waste" and "global warming" stuff yet. Actually, what I refer to is the closing of the...
