    Bashed Business Car

I was at the roundhouse the other day and watched as they brought in a piece of antique rolling stock for inspection and it took my mind back to the early days of the Danville and Rigby Junction RR, way back to the mid-70's! One thing I have constantly been on guard to avoid is taking myself...

    KATO EF15 couplers

Catt, I used the short shank couplers on the EF-15 but, sometimes, with certain MT equipped cars, the MT "pin" would touch the pilot. Of course, it wasn't a problem with cars similarly equipped with Unimates. I would suggest you try the medium length ones. The short ones do look better...

    KATO EF15 couplers

Rich, the MDC couplers are different from the older designed Unimates. The MDC ones will sometimes couple "automatically" with MT's but, won't uncouple except by hand. If you compare the two side by side, the Unimates look a little "heavier". Plus, the Unimate shank won't fit into the MDC...

    KATO EF15 couplers

Catt, I don't know what kind of tips you require about the Unimates but, here's the sum of my knowlege/experience. I think they are made now by red Caboose, will have to research that later. They will mate well with any knuckle type coupler but must be hand coupled/uncoupled. The best...

    KATO EF15 couplers

Catt, this is absolutely no help to you, only a statement of comiseration! I bought an EF-15 and an EF-57 years ago and, for the life of me, couldn't figure out an MT conversion. I ended up installing Unimates which, while not automatic, at least let me run them with MT equipped equipment...

It's MONDAY 11-15-04, weekend modeling accomplishments!

I've had a busy week working on two bash projects. The first is an attempt to bash a Boston and Maine Class R-1-d heavy Mountain, the heaviest Mountains built in the USA. The chassis is a cut down (new) Bachmann 4-8-4 with the latest refinements. A few details still need to be added...

What's the trick? Front coupler on MDC Mogul

Easy as pie, Dad! :thumb: The pilot has two pieces that sorta snap together. The pilot itself is attached to the pilot deck by two small pins. If you twist the coupler gently, you'll notice that the pieces separate slightly. You should be able to withdraw the rapido (watch out the...

    Which steamer is better?

To play the Devil's advocate on this one..... I have two of the bachmann 0-6-0's and, considering the price, they're really not bad running critters, a little on the fast side. What gives them an "edge" is that besides pick-up on the loco wheels, they also pick up electricity from the lead...

Would I Have To Change Anything?

Unitrack is just about bullet-proof. I run equipment from the late 60's to the present on it and have had nary a problem with derailments or electrical integrity since the early 90's. Dick

    Which steamer is better?

Ron is right on about the MDC 2-6-0. I recently got two off ebay for $70 each and they are sweet little things...... smooth, quiet, and good pullers. I have no problem with the motor in the tender. Bachmann, for some inexplicable reason, chose to put the 4-8-2's traction tires on the thrid...

    Which steamer is better?

My first choice would be the 2-8-0. The 4-8-2 is a fine engine but doesn't seem to have as much pulling capacity as the 2-8-0. I have three of the 2-8-0's and two of the 4-8-2's and am very happy with all of them. I have not heard good things about the last one on your list. Dick

    Kato UniTrack

Like all track systems, it has its proponents and its detractors. About 1/4 of my present layout is Unitrack and I wish I had discovered it before I started the layout. If I had, I would have done the entire layout with it. Its major drawback is that it is not flexible and you are limited to...

    Getting started!

We started calling him SS in the chatroom as a "shorthand" Screwy Sqrl. It was much easier to type and there was no other reason for doing it other than expediency. In all the time I've been in the chatroom, I can't remember anybody making any other association with the letters. I think this...
