    Minimum Radius Required?

I've got some curves that are around 17"R (or less) on my 4x6' layout! I have an outer loop that basically uses 18" to 20"R curves and an inner loop with 17"R -- these might even be tighter as I haven't properly worked out their radii! I obviously have to go with what works for the space that...

Why is the TH&B so popular?

Thanks! I'm getting more curious about this railway and how it allows the modeler to run NYC (and other types?) of locos on a layout. Rob

    Rail-Fanning in Huntsville

You're probably right. All I know is that it's narrow-gauge. ... But it looks like the other replies have pretty much answered this question. Thanks for your feedback. Rob

    Rail-Fanning in Huntsville

Last Saturday, my youngest son and I were able to visit the Huntsville and Lake of Bays Railway (www.portageflyer.org), a small, narrow-gauge heritage railway in Huntsville, where 35 of us attended a special rail-fan day. (Huntsville is in Muskoka, about 2.5 hours north of Toronto by car.)...

Brand New Steam Loco Now Operational

Interesting -- thanks. I wonder, though, how other/similar steam locos (such as the Flying Scotsman) cope with the new, lower bridges? Maybe Network Rail was just erring on the safe side. Cheers, Rob

Brand New Steam Loco Now Operational

Thanks for your feedback. It's interesting that there are several details where they had to depart from the original design either because certain materials are no longer available or because those skills/techniques are no longer used. Apparently (for example) the tender has been welded...

eBay Question (paying customs & duty?)

Thanks, Wayne ... that would be frustrating. It's crazy when they go after harmless people like MRR folk! At least it seems that the only things I might have to worry about are taxes and higher shipping. I've bought a few MRR items from eBay (mostly within Canada) and have done fairly well...

    Troubles

Yes, I can relate -- I have to get a dental crown and renew my drivers's licence and license plates. All of this will add up to about $600.

eBay Question (paying customs & duty?)

Thanks, Wayne! I especially appreciate the feedback re mailing vs. couriering. I'll ensure that anything I buy is mailed. Cheers, Rob

Brand New Steam Loco Now Operational

Yes, I think it's incredibly exciting -- thumbs up to the Brits for doing this! It will be neat to see it in different liveries. I've also been watching it on Youtube as well as on a British MRR forum. Maybe I'll even get to see it next year when we plan to visit England?! Take...

eBay Question (paying customs & duty?)

Thanks ... I'm checking that website as well. I've bought a few things from the US (a model part for a diesel costing less than $5) and similar items, books and decals from the UK (costing from $20 to $50) without having to pay customs or duty. But it might be different if I buy a loco for...

eBay Question (paying customs & duty?)

Thanks, Josh. This gives me an idea. I suspect that I'd be OK buying something costing around $20-$60 (from the US or UK) then. As you say, higher shipping costs are probably the biggest expense. Cheers, Rob

eBay Question (paying customs & duty?)

Every now and then I'm tempted to buy MRR items on eBay from international sellers -- mainly from the UK or USA -- but I'm leery about having to pay duty or customs. Just wondering if many Gauge members (especially fellow Canadians) have ever bought locos, rolling stock or similar items on...

    MagLev Trains?

Interesting -- thanks for this info. So 3rd-rail electric lines could be viable in Canada & the northern US if it wasn't for their cost. Maybe it's the great distances that make it too expensive? Ontario alone is (geographically) about 3X the size of the UK, so maybe that's why they are more...

It's true my camera has at least survived a fair bit of abuse. It could be that, because it's so easy/convenient to use, I'm simply using it more, therefore increasing the chances of having it dropped or damaged. It is fair to say I'm using it a lot more than I did with my older film cameras.

My second accident with my digital camera was actually quite funny (in retrospect!). I was out hiking with my two sons and had the camera around my neck and my backpack on my back. When I took the backpack off, the camera got stuck under a backpack strap. As I pull down on the backpack, it...

I think I can relate. I've had 3 mishaps with my camera, which was top-of-the-line in 2005! After the first accident, its frame was cracked but a well-known camera chain store referred to a dingy little camera repair shop (they said they would be cheaper, which it was). It cost about $130 to...

How much mechanical imperfections in engines do you tolerate?

I believe you mean actual mechanic deficiencies, in terms of how well or poorly a loco runs (and not discrepancies in detail)? If it's the first option, I obviously prefer that my locos should run smoothly and prototypically. Out of my 22 locos, I do have 4-5 old ones that don't run that...
