    God's Wonderful Railway?

Interesting! Did you say he has a real railroad? Just curious! Maybe he's involved with one of the UK's heritage lines? I know he has a huge layout in the U.S. and I think also a British layout in England. Rob

Looks interesting, but I'll have to check that it's on in Canada, on the same day, etc. Thanks, Rob

    God's Wonderful Railway?

That's one of the reasons, that I've read elsewhere, which may explain this connection. The railway modeler is in control & in charge of his/her own little world. Cheers, Rob

    God's Wonderful Railway?

Thanks! Yes, I did realize that the British often said that GWR stood for "God's Wonderful Railway." There were also a few less flattering versions as well -- i.e., "Good Workers Redundant" or something to that effect! At any rate, the GWR is arguably the most popular and possibly...

    God's Wonderful Railway?

I just finished reading the article tonight that inspired my question. This was the cover story in the Sept. 2002 issue of Railway Magazine, called "God's Wonderful Railway." The article goes on to suggest that large railway stations resemble cathedrals and, when there are no trains going...

    God's Wonderful Railway?

Yes, winter is the model train season here in Ontario as well. Unless we're having one of our many humid spells and it's "500 degrees" outside, then I start to hibernate inside again until it cools off! I actually continue my train hobby during the summer by visiting various heritage...

Thanks for this feedback -- I appreciate that they're just interesting and humorous observations. Rob

    God's Wonderful Railway?

I agree -- I think all of these are good points! I also enjoy the scenery aspect but struggle a little with wiring and really struggle with solving mechanical problems. Rob

    God's Wonderful Railway?

Yes, good point. Trains are certainly an escape. But, believe me, we're all sinners! Even the best train on good track can be derailed!

    God's Wonderful Railway?

Thanks -- interesting thoughts and observations. Yes, I think the clergy-train connection is evident both in the UK and here. The artist/musician aspect is interesting as well. Personally, I enjoy both operations and scenery, but really struggle with technical stuff like wiring and...

    God's Wonderful Railway?

I've read in a couple articles that -- at least in the British scene -- there is a rather high number of clergy who are railway enthusiasts. Some of these were Church of England clergy and bishops. One of the most famous was the Rev. Awdry who wrote the Thomas series. The trend may...

    Toronto Xmas Train Show

It looks like the Whitby Train Show is the weekend BEFORE (not after) the Toronto show. I really enjoy this Whitby show (http://www.trainweb.org/prrc/novshow.htm) so I'm going to mark it on my calendar now! Rob

    Toronto Xmas Train Show

I usually try to go as well -- it would be great to meet up there with any Gauge members as well.

    Toronto Xmas Train Show

I also enjoy the smaller shows -- you do get good value for your money (an inexpensive day out with the kids:mrgreen:) and they're easier to get to, etc. Two that I really like are the Whitby one (usually the weekend following the Toronto show [it's actually the weekend BEFORE, not after -- see...

What era draws your attention the most?

I voted for "transition era" as I'm definitely interested in the historical side of things and really like steam and early diesels. The 1930s & WW2 would be my next favorite time periods. I also model a lot of British stuff, and the time periods are a little different there because steam ran...

    Toronto Xmas Train Show

I plan to be there, probably with at least one of my sons. Yes, it would be great to meet up again! I'm looking forward as this is always a great show with lots of variety. Cheers, Rob

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

This Costco loco makes me feel pretty good about a recent project of mine. I had kitbashed a ATSF Pacific into a CNR Pacific. While my kitbashed CNR Pacific is loaded with discrepancies, I think it might be a far more accurate model of a CNR loco than this Costco one is!

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

It's a great looking loco but it's annoying that it's a ATSF loco masquerading as a CNR one. I guess it's because of the market they're selling this in (Costco, therefore to kids and not-so-serious modellers) that they can get away with such discrepancies? Rob

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Interesting!! My wife actually has a Costco membership and goes there all the time. I'll have to check this out. Maybe they'll even discount them down the road as Loblaws does? Thanks, Rob
