Video of the Hudson CP 2816 Steam Engine

That's a great video -- my son and I really enjoyed watching it and a few other videos. Thanks for posting it. Rob

What era draws your attention the most?

Good questions! I don't have the answers, although I could mull them over. Look forward to what others say.

    God's Wonderful Railway?

FYI, there is a 4-page article on Pete Waterman and his new book, "A Train For Life" (or something to that effect) in the October issue of Hornby Magazine. (Hornby Magazine is a British MRR magazine that I get.) This book is profiles Waterman's models and the man himself. It almost sounds...

Exactly -- I know what you mean!

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Yes, exactly. That's just how I viewed these other train sets sold by the other store chain (Loblaws). I have a pretty nice CNR Hudson that I bought about 3 years ago. It's not 100% accurate in detail but it at least looks something like a CNR Hudson! I've now weathered it and am...

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Thanks, Russ. Good points, especially about the diesel/steam difference. Yes, I've noticed that each railroad seemed to have their own version of a Northern or Pacific, etc. I think there was only one period-correct one out of 6-8 cars that came with the set! Maybe you could pretend it...

What type of road bed do you use?

Thanks! A 2x8' layout is a feasible layout but still a "down-the-road" project. Just thinking about it for now! Mine would have to be an HO layout since I have a lot of HO rolling stock. Rob

What type of road bed do you use?

Thanks! That makes sense. I was thinking that, if I were to build a new layout, it would be another small one. Either a long shelf layout (still small, only around 2 x 8') or 4 x 8, etc. I was hoping that the foam would still be strong enough for that (but it would probably be safer to...

Tetter's Layout Progress and Other Pics.

Wow, this is impressive! I came across this thread a few months ago and have just revisited it. The wiring is mind-boggling. I've just done some minor wiring on my small 4x6 layout and it was all I could do to get my mind around that. At any rate, looks like a great layout! Rob

What type of road bed do you use?

When I built my current small layout 4-5 years ago, I used cork because I thought that was the best source, especially over homasote (which seemed hard to find). If I were to build a new layout, I would use the black foam strips. They seem much easier to handle, position and lay. I'd...

What era draws your attention the most?

Interesting comments above. I think there's a whole new "diesel generation" out there who are totally fascinated by diesels but not too interested in steam. I base this on other threads and a few observations at train shows, etc. This is because there are few steam engines in operation...

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Thanks, Russ. This is interesting but I find the practice annoying. I'm not a rivet counter by any means, but I like to be at least somewhat accurate & realistic! My wife & I went to Costco today and actually saw this Northern train set. It was a fine-looking loco, but still (of course) a...

What era draws your attention the most?

The poll results interest me. I'm surprised that the bottom 4 categories are so strong and that the transition era isn't higher. The transition era is still the highest, but only slightly. Perhaps this suggests a shift in modeling interests -- or maybe I'm just out-of-touch a little, with...

Thanks for your feedback as well! It's been a great discussion, I just hope it doesn't stray into controversial waters though. Cheers, Rob

    Toronto Xmas Train Show

I'd be interested in going to the Narrow Gauge Madness event in April if possible. I enjoyed riding on the Portage Flyer this summer. I'd also like to meet up with any Gauge members at the Toronto show so I might try to pop over. Cheers, Rob

    God's Wonderful Railway?

You summed it up really well !! It's all about creation, not punishment or power-tripping. I work as a graphic designer for a magazine, so I'm constantly creating new layouts or creatively manipulating photos in Photoshop, etc. It's an awesome feeling, being able to create and try out new...

    God's Wonderful Railway?

No offense, but I don't think any modelers literally pretend that they are God and punish problematic locos, etc. That would be pretty sad if they did! All these articles are saying is that a model railway might remind someone of God and creation. There are simply some elements in the...

    God's Wonderful Railway?

Yes, and I think there are a few rich folks as well. Actually, I seem to recall that most of the steam locos that run on the UK's heritage lines are privately-owned. Very few are owned by the various heritage railways themselves, but are usually owned by wealthy celebrities.

    God's Wonderful Railway?

Thanks! It's all coming back now -- is his name Pete Waterman or something like that? I have read about 1-2 wealthy people (as you describe above) who have bought and own their own locos, restoring them, etc. I do remember hearing some controversy over the Flying Scotsman ... it's now owned...

    God's Wonderful Railway?

I can certainly relate to this. I'd love to be involved at a heritage railway -- keep thinking about it and possibly involving one of my sons. But being a father of a young family doesn't leave me with much free time, especially with so many jobs to do around the house, etc. I'm hoping, in a...
