    Whitby Train Show this weekend

I know what you mean by having to watch your spending. Usually, when I'm at these shows, I'm looking either looking for real deals or rare items. Anything beyond that I might as well get at my LHS's. I've never been to the Brampton show but have considered it. I usually have too many other...

    Whitby Train Show this weekend

Tell me about it -- I could go to a model train show or railway event for the next 4 weekends if I wanted. I still might try, although it's difficult to find the time. Rob

    Whitby Train Show this weekend

Thanks for your comments, David and Tetters. It would be great to catch up with either of you. I'm planning to go to the Whitby show tomorrow as early as I can, for only 2 hours (I have to head back to do jobs to do at home. ) I'm also planning to go to the Christmas Toronto Show...

What type of road bed do you use?

Thanks! Although I realize I might have to use some glue to fasten the track to the foam (the spikes probably won't hold it well enough). Rob

What type of road bed do you use?

I'm thinking of "throwing together" a small layout on a piece of foam board and skipping the roadbed part. The foam should help to absorb the sound. Does this sound like a good idea or am I crazy to skip the roadbed? ... I could later define a road/ballast area by chiseling out grooves on...

More Progress at Toronto's John Street Roundhouse

Good progress is happening at the Toronto Railway Historical Association's John Street Roundhouse/railway museum. You can read about the latest developments here: http://www.trha.ca/news.html There are plans to move the historic Don Station (currently at Todmorden Mills historical site...

    Stuck again

I can relate a little, i.e. being confused about what to do next. I work on sections of my layout at a time and basically end up doing the scenery and ballasting more or less at the same time. I usually finish a section of scenery, and then do the ballasting after. I can't remember if this...

    Whitby Train Show this weekend

Just wondering if any Gauge folks are planning to attend the Whitby train show this weekend? I've been going to this show for the past few years and really enjoy it. http://www.trainweb.org/prrc/novshow.htm There's lots of variety of layouts and it's a good size. Rob

    Blaze Destroys Historic Rail Tower

Hi Andrew, Which cities/towns are doing this (cutting up remaining steam locos)? Regarding another comment here, I guess having a steam loco being part of a restaurant is better than completely destroying it -- at least it's still preserved and on view for people to enjoy? Rob

    Whats wrong with Atlas Turnouts¿

I had problems with Atlas turnouts on my 4x6' HO layout. Basically, they weren't the correct gauge, usually too wide which caused derailments. I've replaced all of these with either Peco or Hornby turnouts which seem to be more precise. I'm sure that a large number of Atlas turnouts are OK...

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Thanks! I asked a similar question on The Gauge 1-2 years ago. Someone here posted a pic of the Flying Scotsman (when it was over here on its North American Tour) sitting next to a CN Hudson, so something similar. The Scotsman was quite small compared to the Hudson -- the size difference was...

TH&B Loco at Westfield Pioneer Village

Thanks for this feedback. I wish we could finance heritage steam railways over here as they do in Britain, where there are dozens of them. I guess we don't have the population ... and what people we do have are all really spread out geographically compared to Britain. I hadn't heard of this...

TH&B Loco at Westfield Pioneer Village

I just learned about this loco and this pioneer village tonight. Here's the link: http://www.westfieldheritage.ca/buildings_2.htm Have any Gauge members ever seen this loco or visited this pioneer village? I'm sure this loco doesn't run! but there is another pic on this site...

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Thanks! That's interesting because my family and I had a good look at the Northern that's located at the CNE grounds this summer. To us, it appeared HUGE especially compared to the British steamers that we've seen. It was not only apparently longer but taller. So, to see one of these...

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Thanks! Well, at least the issue is settled now. I wonder if Costco will ever discount their Northern as Loblaws used to?:confused: Rob

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Thanks! Yes, I can see that the boiler looks too long and the wrong shape -- I think that's the first thing that stands out as being incorrect. Good point about the layout!:confused I probably shouldn't have anything larger than a Pacific, especially with my layout's tight curves...

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

Do you think this Costco Northern could be kit-bashed into a more authentic CN engine? Or is it so inaccurate that you couldn't even do that ... would it be too much of a challenge? Several Gauge folks will be much more familiar with both the ATSF and CNR prototypes. Thanks, Rob

    Next Loblaws/PC Trainset?

In general, the Hudson set went on sale about year later at half price. In the Toronto area, I don't recall seeing the Big 10 being discounted. I did, however, still see several sets still for sale several months to a year after it was released. Around here, it did sell well but I don't...

What era draws your attention the most?

Some of the comments on this thread have caused me to think that we just might be living in a "golden age of trains" and not realize it, simply because it's so easy for us to take things for granted and not fully appreciate the trains that we see every day. We could very well be living in a...

Video of the Hudson CP 2816 Steam Engine

I think this Hudson came out our way (southern Ontario) a few years ago. I'd give my two hind teeth to see it again. I guess this means waiting until it returns or saving up money for a BC trip! Rob
