    Stewart FT light side (Why)

Live, and learn. I was under the impression that Santa Fe was the only road to have the side number boards. Most of the FTs I've seen do not have them, A, or B units.

    Re-laying my narrow guage track

Kevin, I don't visit General talk, too often, so missed your thread on #3. Nice work!, and quite a history! So Far I haven't experienced any problems with quartering, and this is the first I've heard about them. I'll have to keep an eye on the IF 2-8-2 I did from the MDC IF 2-8-0. I have seen...

    Info Needed Regarding Sn2

I own three N scale steam locos. A lifelike P2K Heritage 2-8-8-2, A Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0, and a Roundhouse (now Athearn) "Old Time" 2-8-0. I have also run a couple of the ConCor steam locos. I'm happy with the three, and, from what I saw initially, I'd also recommend the ConCor. That said...

    Info Needed Regarding Sn2

I will risk an offer of "good advice". The N-Scale mechanism you choose should be determined by how good it will look with an S scale boiler and cab, or carbody. In all the things we can save money on, in this hobby, the one thing you shouldn't "go cheap on", is the locomotive. You can make...

Picture thread of your Logging, Mining, or unique industrial equipment.

This is a modification I did to an Athearn "Hustler". It's used by the shipyard to move standard gauge rolling stock, for transfer of load to the narrow gauge.

    Info Needed Regarding Sn2

I measured with the vernier caliper, instead of the scale rule, and you are correct. HOn3 track is 2.5 scale inches too wide, and N scale track is 1.4 scale inches too narrow. I think the final decision comes down to availability, and cost, with a eye to how well the chosen mechanisms look in...

    Letting Off More Steam

Lockable castors.....Good idea, for a lot of reasons. Not only can you more easily perform routine maintenance, you can actually have at least two "fronts" of the layout!

    Letting Off More Steam

My first "layout" was built on a 4' X 6' sheet of plywood. I have operated on a 70' X 140' HO layout, that started at 30" track height, and ran to a track elevation of approximately 96". The 70' X 140' layout was only fun when I could walk around with my train. The 4' X 6' was fun to build...

    Info Needed Regarding Sn2

On another note completely, Only15 is a new member (Welcome to the gauge!), and has opened a very interesting thread on Sn2. I am asking that if others wish to discuss the different scales, please open a new thread for that purpose, so that the starter of this thread doesn't have to "wade...

    Info Needed Regarding Sn2

The only problem with this, is that HOn3 track measures 2'-7" in S scale(better for Sn30, at 31"), and N track measures 2' in S scale. In the larger scale (S) the difference would be quite noticeable. If using N flex track, removing every other tie would be a better alternative than using HOn3...

    Info Needed Regarding Sn2

Well, You caught me napping! I actually had to go measure N scale track with an "S" scale ruler, and.....it really is 2' gauge track in S scale! :excited1: As you get into this project, please keep us up to speed with photos. This sounds like a great addition to the "Narrow Gauge Model...

Harold, It's good to have you as a member here. Your tutorials are always well prepared, and presented, and they are always interesting. I keep finding methods, techniques, and materials that have relevance to far more than just the project you're working on, and showing here. :thumb: :thumb...

An open letter from Sheriff Jim

Jim, Good to see you here. Your words show an understanding of the differences between the two forums. Each, in its own way provides "community", which is something we "human creatures" all need, though not specifically, in the same ways. Our differences are what make us both "interesting"...

    An Age-Old Railroaders Problem

It will take me about a week to "take inventory", but my guess is about 4 pieces of rolling stock for each loco. That said, however, there are about 45 B&O hoppers that are only run with one loco. There's 80 wood iced reefers that run with two Clinchfield locos. 50 N&W hoppers that have three...

    logging mallet

The Virginian, is one of the few roads that I do not specifically model. The situation is; I model Northeastern/Eastern roads. My "layout" being three modules of a modular group, and the Lake County Model Rail Road Club, in Wauconda, Il., I can operate most any road I choose, so have built...

    MDC Shay Tip Sheet

Leon, If you do contact Athearn, you will have to use the part number. Apparently, when Athearn bought MDC, all they got with the inventory was a part number list, and no descriptions. Be patient, MDC had a ton of kits, and parts, and Athearn is still finding surprises.

    logging mallet

Baldwin built a total of three 2-4-4-2s all of which were standard gauge. The narrow gauge 2-4-4-2 I spoke of was built by the Sag Harbor Shipbuilding and Drydock company (the fictional "parent company" of all my roads), starting with a Baldwin built outside frame 2-8-0. Baldwin engineers were...
