    Childhood train influence?

Not exactly on topic, but I'm reminded of the first time I went swimming in fresh water....it was in the Housatonic river, and I instantly realized that fresh water wasn't anywhere near as bouyant as salt water!! I learned the meaning of the word, "sinking"

    Scenic Ridge Questions

The "track kit" that comes with scenic ridge is all "snap track", as in short sections, that are "snapped" together. For a beginner, probably OK, but I would still recommend using flex track instead. You could build a layout for a lot less, building from scratch as Kevin recommended...

    Childhood train influence?

The Long Island Rail Road, ran a train out to Montauk, late afternoon, called "the Cannonball express". We had gone out to the cottage midweek, and my dad came out Friday evening, on the "Express". We met him at the Bridgehampton station. I was....maybe six, or seven. There was a steam loco on...

    Minimum Radius Required?

You may have to go with a bit more distance between the rails, to account for the combined overhang of the loco, and rolling stock on the other track. When I run my B&O EL3a on the modular layout, I have to keep it on the outside track, the boiler hangs too far out and collides with trains, if...

    Shamus - Health update

Not good news at all. That we may not see anything new from him is sad. That we will see him fight to the utmost end is perhaps sadder still. If there is any good at all, it is the legacy he will leave, and the sheer number of lives he has touched. My prayer, now, is that he will know when...

Testor's Modeling Glue- The Wrong Stuff?

The other thing to consider, is that ACC, "Superglue", has superb "tensile strength", you can pull on the joint with great force, and it will hold. It has poor "sheer strength", apply force at an angle to the joint and it will break easily. The guy, dangling from the girder, need only tilt his...

    Are you a model railroader?

I had an 8' X 10" modular layout, with a 2' X 4' extension. There is almost nothing left of that now, as I have transferred most of the scenic items to modules that are compatible with the Lake County Society of Modular Engineers show layout. With that, and being a member of the Lake county...

Read this if you are having problems on Zealot

The slight difference here, as opposed to broadcast television, is the hobby forums draw members, and numbers sell advertising. As long as The-Gauge stays as it is, it will draw members, and therefore, advertising revenue.

    A thought about waterfalls

The problem with a back lighted waterfall, is, light. The fall would have a tendency to "stand out", rather than "be part of the scenery". Still, it's a concept that could use a little playing with. Then, there's the same basic problem as with train motion.....scale speed. Water, falls at the...

Very unusual 15" Gauge Vertical Boilered Steamer..

Very cool piece of "junkbashing?". That would make a great Gn15 project! I remember talking with some one who wanted to do a "single truck" shay in Gn15.

    Remember Mel Thornburgh ?

Mel Thornburgh ! Now there's a name I haven't heard in an age! He did an article on scratchbuilding an O scale B&O C-16a 0-4-0 switcher with slope back tender. two of the four, C-16, 0-4-0T's had their tanks removed, and tenders added, to become C-16a's.
