Athearn in the N scale business ?

I have several (probably 5) Athearn diesels - mostly SD70 series - and they run very well. They are as or better detailed than Kato, run as smoothly as any, and have a strong motor for good pulling power. IMHO, they're a better value than Kato in that they are well molded, have better exterior...

    Rolling Thunder

WOW that is great. That's a lot of Abrams...interesting that none have unit markings that I can see...and a few are in the older NATO green scheme. Hmmmm. I'm no tank expert, are these the original M1A1 or the later model M1A2 Abrams? Maybe this train is destined for the bone yard.

    My first built up!

Ya know...I just re-read my original reply and boy it read to me that I was just throwing stones or being smug or preachy or some know-it-all regarding weathering - and that's not at all how I meant that reply to read. I'm very sorry about that and I apologize. I meant to convey my...

    Watchout for low flying aircraft

That is really great. I'd like to see those trains roll by one day - I fly to Boeing Field fairly often but haven't seen one yet in and around the Renton/Seattle area. On a related note, McDonnell Douglas used to ship F18 fuselages in boxcars from St Louis to the Northrup in the Los Angeles...

Can You Recommend Track Planning Software

I tried out the AnyRail "trail version" and liked the way it worked as compared to the Atlas RTS software. You can only place 50 pieces of track until the program stops working and asks for payment to license the product. Overall, it is easier to operate than the Atlas IMO, and if I wouldn't...

    My first built up!

I really like the heavy steel look of the crane support. Plus, the cabling looks great. The rust on the one I-beam looks great - but what caused it? Something drip on it, drop on it, dent it? Just offering ideas. Plus, the gearing could have lots of grease (or some similar color). Maybe...

Trains rolling through town after 15 years

As someone from Stoystown, I'm glad to hear the news that a mine has reopened and trains are running. I remember seeing the B&O pulling those long coal trains all around Somerset and Johnstown...now it's NS...times change.

Nice pictures...what color an product did you use to color the roadbed and rails? I like the dark color of the rails - it looks really good.

    Extreme [Layout] Makeover?

Unfortunately, like Russ, I feel the same way about some of the RR magazines out there. I haven't been in the hobby too many years, but I've already seen many duplicate pictures, stories, ideas. I understand that they're trying to market a magazine to many different levels of hobby'ers...but...

Taking the plung with some pictures

Nice engines and rolling stock. I like the way the tracks are staggered vertically...looks pretty cool.

    DC fundamentalist

I somewhat feel the same way...with the new shelf plan I'm designing, it will run straight DC and be "upgrade-able" to DCC in the future. But right now, I'm happy knowing I can run it the way it is with DC and start the long process of converting to DCC - adding the controllers and cards as...

    Shelf Switching Layouts

I'm in sort of the same situation...I'm planning my new layout on five shelving units, hard-mounted to the wall, that are 14.5 inches wide and just about 16 feet long. I created a simple dog bone shape, then added turnouts where necessary/desired to create a yard, passenger line, and two spurs...

    help with color?

Reminds me of a lumber yard I just went to last week...same type of general look to it...and at that yard, most of the buildings were old and grayed wood, which I though was funny since they had lumber everywhere. There was saw dust piles here and there, and lumber of various cuts and lengths...
