April 14th - Working on the Railroad?

Didn't do anything railroady. We hit the road in our RV following Church on Easter for a week in Savannah GA and Charleston, SC. We did a lot of sight seeing, lighthousing, and mmmmgood eating. Paula Dean's in Savannah is to die for. Gained 5 pounds this trip : (

    New DCC????

Rick, I have the Digitrax Chief (radio) and enjoy the freedom it gives. I am just running a lot of trains on 3 continuous run tracks right now as I have not completed my layout. Last night I had 8 separate trains going at once (3-2 loco consists, a Pioneer Zephyr and 4 single engine trains...

Does anyone read the Walthers Catalog anymore?

I use the catalog and mailers for ideas for scratch building structures. I don't order anything from them but their photos give enough information to make a decent building.

    How do you make snow?

I have in the past used sifted dry plaster of paris to put on buildings for a temporary winter scene. When I was through with the "winter season" it vacuumed right off. I have seen wet plaster used on rock faces and on building roofs in more permanent scenes also. There are a variety of...

    DT400R idle

If there is a downside to the DT400R it is a battery hog. You do need to take the battery out when you power down overnight. I left mine in "power save" for a week and came back to a reading of 7.2 volts enough to not work effectively unplugged.:curse:

    NCE Power cab

Information on Tony's Trains shows that the PowerCab should handle up to 6 trains comfortably. I am not familiar with the unit but it looks like a simple set to begin with. Most systems allow you to address more than one train on a given controller. There is a memory function that keeps the...

    DCC Starter Sets...

The tech literature says that you can estimate about .5 amp per decoder which in n-scale give you about 7 decodered locos.(you didn't say what scale you were in but this is close. I regularly run 10 decoder equipped locos plus 2 non-decoder locos on my layout with power to spare. BTW I am...

OK, who makes a better engine?

What he said. I have 2 of the Kato SD40-2's and 2 Atlas -8's in BNSF. Put decoders in them and all run great on the layout. Can't find them- they are so quiet. You can' go wrong with them.:)

    Lurkers:

Hisco - I had the same question some time ago. If you click on the "currently active" link it will take you to a listing of who is on line. You will find that a lot of those "311" guests are actually spiderbots from search engines such as Yahoo, Google, etc. There doesn't seem to be a way to...

    Buzzzzing

Depending how new the manufacture of those GP-9 units, you might have light boards at both ends of the frame and NO slot up top for a decoder. In this case the frame needs to be milled down to accept a decoder and you have to solder the appropriate wires to the light boards, motor brushes and...

    Buzzzzing

When you got your system, did you also get decoders for your locomotives. The DC locos have a light board installed in them by default. If they are newer locos they are probably "DCC Ready", meaning you have to buy and install a decoder that will generally replace that light board or plug into...

whats a good N scale cleaning car?

You really need to take care of these rail joints. Do you have a rail flange that is sitting on top of one of the rail joiners. Or are you using different heights of track (i.e Code 80 joined to a 55 without a transition joiner? You are likely to have major operating problems (derails) in the...

Minimum radius for Mikado locomotive ?

It looks better on a larger radius but will handle the 9 3/4 fine.

    Bus wires and feeder wires

CAS A couple of suggestions. For a 40' bus you can probably get away with 14 Gauge house cable. You might find 50' packages at a Wal-Mart. For the feeder wires and the RJ-12 I went to Radio Shack where I found both as well as the 6 prong jacks and a sturdy wire stripper/crimper. your...

    Best DCC for N Scale???

There are probably as many opinions on the "best system" as there are individual users. In other threads you have seen "you should determine what YOU want in YOUR system, check the feature set of the various systems, try one out at a club layout or train show if one is near, and then make your...
