Back and up to my old tricks

Good to see you back Jimmy. I went into that same funk following Robin's passing. Haven't done any building since. I do hang out here and seem to be ready to get on with the hobby.

    Newbie: Locomotive with DCC installed?

Cheetah, Jim is right. Maybe you ought to just sit back now and review what you have learned in the past week or so. Then you can make an intelligent choice of the kinds and types of railroad equipment that will be just right for YOUR railroad. We all have our likes and dislikes, and what...

    Mid 70's UP Roll-by

Great run-by. Nice weathering on the freights. I liked the autos also. I used to drive a '60 Ford "bullet nose" with the big hood and trunk.  Good memories. I like the signal also. Did you build that?

Site crash issues, scaring me away!

FWIW - Just a support note. I have not had any of the problems that have been mentioned in this thread. I am not a real computer whiz but I do know that keeping the cookies and temp files cleaned helps the speed of load and all else with web searches. I dump mine whenever I close the browser...

    Phantom Running

Thanks, J. I don't clear all the functions - just turn the speed to zero and dispatch the address at the end of the session. I will try it and see what happens.:-D

    Newbie: Locomotive with DCC installed?

I would suggest that you go to either Tony's Trains or M. B. Klein. Tony's does great electronics DCC work and sells locos with DCC installed. You might call them to discuss your exact needs here are a couple of links: http://tonystrains.com/ Model Train Stuff Featuring Exclusive Model...

    Lego Trains

I don't know much about them but every year at the Greenburg Train Show here in the Washington DC area a young man has set up his Lego train display. He has a station and town buildings, houses, in addition to a working train (see the photo). It attracts young and old alike.:-D :-D

    Getting Started

You mentioned in an earlier post about buying other locos and putting them on the track and operating them. They should all work but be aware that not all locos come equipped with DCC decoders. Those that do not have the decoders work on address 00 or as directed in your system documentation...

    B-mann DD40AX

:( :( What a bummer... I would take a bit of time to think of some easy ways to keep that from happening again. I see that Jim has thrown out a couple of good ideas. You might want to consider a soft floor covering also to mitigate a future occurance if you are not able to put the blocks or...

    Newbie: Layout Depth???

Ideally, the measure is what you can comfortably reach without destroying anything on your layout. I use mostly 24", but on 3 corners I have a 36" depth. To reach the far corners without damaging trees or buildings I built a 2'x2'x6" portable riser out of some scrap lumber and plywood, that I...

    N Scale Pioneer Zypher

Nah, just keeping the original set. It is such a quiet machine. Creeps on speed step 1 and takes about 10 minutes to go around the lay out at that speed. I have had it to 15 which is about as fast as I want it to go. That is with 4 or 5 other trains on the tracks. They do add class to a...

    Newbie: Layout Depth???

Two feet is okay if you are doing small engines and rolling stock. The longer locos, freights and pax cars will have a lot of overhang on those curves. If you can make the ends 3'-4' as suggested you will be able to turn those trains in style. and it will give you a more scenery area. As...

Great little train. DCC decoder install is not hard at all. You just need to be careful.

New Modeller - Oh Oh !!!

I know that there are a couple of diesels out there that are sound equipped but I am not sure of the manufacturer. Possibly Broadway Limited. You might check them on the internet. Tony's Trains is another place to check for DCC equipped locos. You should look at Atlas and Kato for the better...

New Modeller - Oh Oh !!!

cheetah---George's post above is right on with info about sectional track. What you might want to do is visit a hobby store and take a look at the tracks that we are talking about. Then see if they have a book on basic trackwork or track plans. You will find much information in there on the...

New Modeller - Oh Oh !!!

I'm not sure what your 22" max reference is saying. Flex track by definition is just that. It has an almost infinite number of radii for your curve. Imagine just nudging the tip of a fishing rod. That is way more than a 22" radius. You can shape a 30" section of flex track into a curve as...

    Regarding very tight circles...

Cannonball hit it. I believe that as the turns get tighter it is even more important to have the gauge correct simply because the locos and cars cannot be as forgiving as they can on wider curves.
