    I can tell it's Spring

Mowed the lawn twice so far, and also fixed the riding mower twice. Warned the spouse a new tractor may be in the future. :D RRing is my winter hobby. Though I still try to tinker around over the summer months, there's too much house maintenance, family gatherings and other annoyances to take...

    Paint Removal help

Not sure if it's been mentioned before or how it compares (hey, brake fluid...never thought of that) but I used Easy Off oven cleaner on model car kits back when I was into those. Works pretty well, apply, wait, then scrub off in warm water with some soap and light steel wool.

    N Scale Road Lines

I've got to deal with my roads shortly. Two things I've wondered about using styrene sheets are: 1) How do you cut/get nice corners? Some of mine are pretty tight. 2) How do you hide the seams (doing asphalt type pavement)?

    WS plaster coloring kit

Yup, it's the pigment set. Any idea what I can spray on to seal it? I may try Dullcote on my test part to see what it does. Thanks for letting me know the stuff has a shelf life. If I don't use it all I'll pass the remainders along to someone else.

Okay, how many are in -

A great idea, and I'd love to, but this is the wrong time of year for me to start another project. I'm finding it hard enough to get time for the regular layout already. The darn grass is growing, the mowers need worked on, the truck needs some repair, the race car needs some work, the snow...

    Memories of the Past Times

We still have one Drive-In here, it just opened for the season this week. :) It is, however, up for sale, so you know what that probably means. :( An easy item to model, easily scratch built. Ours is not overly big, so wouldn't take much layout space.

    WS plaster coloring kit

I started playing around with staining my rocks and general scenery today. It takes a little getting used to, but I'm getting the colors I want. It raises a few questions though for those who have used the concentrated stains (I forget what the kit is called). 1) Do you use it over all the...

    Bargin layout

I'll give you $350 for it right now. :D Seriously, nice score. Looks like it was pretty decently built, from a scenery standpoint. What are your plans for it? (Missed original post, wherever it was). :thumb:

    WS plaster cloth/hydrocal fun

Well...:( After some experimentation and a lot of thought, I think I'm going about some of this the wrong way. For the 'blanket' I'm sticking with the WS cloth. It just works so darn well, and one more package will give me more than enough. $16 is worth it not to have to screw around learning...

    WS plaster cloth/hydrocal fun

While you guys were typing all these replies (thanks!!), I was at Lowes checking out the plaster aisle. I was a bit surprised to find they don't carry much...most repair products are now tubs of pre-made stuff. But, they still had a box of DAP Plaster of Paris, $2.50 vs. $7.50 for WS stuff...

    WS plaster cloth/hydrocal fun

The lightweight Hydrocal is exactly that...much lighter than regular Hydrocal, but it sets very quickly. I have a small layout so the expense isn't horrible, and it's basically the same stuff the plaster cloth is made of, so I didn't worry about compatability. I'm wondering if I could zip some...

    WS plaster cloth/hydrocal fun

Having jumped over the hurdle that was my fear of beginning my scenery, I'm now headlong into cuts and valleys on my door based N layout. :) Since the quantities needed are small, I've gone with the WS plaster cloth, which is great stuff. Easy and fun to use. However--:( Probably thanks to...

Nice start. I love these beginning-to-end photo journals. Keep 'em coming!

Most Challenging Aspect of the Hobby

Hey, tried it today for the first time. It's fun! :) Have to admit I'm pretty pleased with the results, though will need a skim coat or two of Hydrocal to really seal it up. I have no fear now! Time to add reverse loops all over the layout! I can do anything! :D

    Model your hometown RR?

I approached it a little differently. My hometown was served by the Reading, then Penn Central, then Conrail. But while I was growing up it was Reading. I moved a few towns over and am only a couple miles from the former PRR Philly-Harrisburg mainline. Needless to say this would allow plenty of...

Most Challenging Aspect of the Hobby

I'm with Val also. I spend a lot of time staring, poking, and paging through the Walthers catalog, which I should have memorized by now. I hate wiring, but have it figured out, so it's not an issue. My current stumbling block is the scenery base. I have the WS plaster cloth, and newspaper...

    Railyard Rookie--help wanted

Bill, and others... I looked quite a bit around the internet and have been most pleased with The Gauge, so have made it my home. It is a fine resource, and the folks here are tremendously helpful and supportive. I just returned to the hobby after 15-20 years and have decided on N scale as well...

DPM kit, first N building completed!

Thanks. Paper...yeah, hadn't thought of that. Should work nicely. :thumb: Pigeons...well, some of my hot glue residue could be pigeon-like with some imagination. :D

DPM kit, first N building completed!

(Mods, please move the thread if I've posted under the wrong category.) After several rather frustrating weeks modifying the trackplan and getting nothing settled, I decided to take a break and build DPM's Apothecary building that I received as a gift. Since scenery and structures are 'my...
