    weird tanks anyone?

I bet the "ball tank" was fun to drive downhill - especially if you tried to put on the brakes ... :-0

How bout a blue sky background???

I strongly agree! Don't worry about the brand/store, there is tremendous variation in the color of the sky, there is no "right" shade. When thinking about color, what we see in our mind is often not the same as what we see with our eyes (e.g. we might think the color of a shadow is "black'...

N scale city, highrises and Skyscrapers

Outstanding, really nice work! Very nicely constructed and finished, I like your choice of colors (realistic, and not over saturated, as is so common). Bravo!

    Anyone have this happen before?

Just for the record, Al Gore never said he invented the internet. He was misquoted, the misquote was then mischaracterized and propogated far and wide for political purposes (as were many similar fabricated Gore quotes).

    made in America

It's hard to translate the amount easily for Chinese workers. I think a "typical" Chinese factory worker (for the kinds of factories you guys are talking about) probably makes something like 500 - 800 rmb per month. In China, a factory of any size likely provides room & board on-site (or...

    Why So Many Diesels?

This thread finally solves a mystery for me! I love railroad technology of the mid 1800s, but I seldom see any of that in model RR layouts. I've long wondered why anyone would want to mess around with a plain, utilitarian box on wheels (how diesels look to me), when there were so many...

    Concrete Bridge Piers and Abutments

Good point. From a card modeler's biased perspective ... I think cardstock should easily be strong enough. Structures made of heavy card are like little cartons. At that size, they can support a lot of weight, particularly if designed to do so - think of how much weight can be proportionately...

    trains in movies

I'm surprised that there was no mention in that other thread of "The Titfield Thunderbolt"! It's a 1953 British comedy about a village that loses it's railroad service. The locals are so incensed that they drag an ancient steamer out of a musem, and start their own railroad to compete with...

    Concrete Bridge Piers and Abutments

Have you considered cardstock? If you have a color printer (or access to one), take a look at ScaleScenes. They offer some concrete/stone/brick piers, abutments and retaining walls. The pier below goes for $5 - download once, print as many as you need. From the site: - No painting...

    trains in movies

There must be scores of films "starring" trains, but I bet the first was Buster Keaton's "The General" (1927). What a great film - amazing stunts, and still funny (humor often ages poorly)! And a spectacular train wreck as a bonus.

what do non railroaders think of your layout?

eve_9d9, the people who don't "get" your model railroading probably spend most of their free time passively watching tv. Unfortunately, I think many - most? - people couldn't imagine taking time away from their tv shows for something like learning new skills, creating things, making art or...

Talk about a rare HO piece!! wow..

Next time you're down there ... ? For $44,000 I think I would be pulling into Dad's driveway right about now. With a digital camera and some professional lighting equipment. And a big bottle of something for Dad. ;-)

    Car Cards?

Kevinkrey, I think this is the way to go. If you have railroad cars which are actually identical down to the decals, how about doing something to the cars to make them unique? That would make things much simpler. 60103's idea would be an easy fix. If a sticker isn't durable enough, how...

    Car Cards?

A very basic way would be to use a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel to arrange the information in the form of a table. Make column headings across the top for all the information you want to track for each car (e.g. "Road #", "Coupler Type", etc). At least one of the columns...

custom decals - a helpful tip

Kevin, as a card modeler I deal with screen versus print disparities all the time. Here's a suggestion to save precious decal paper - make a "sample strip" something like the cards of color samples that paint stores provide. In your graphics application, make a series of green boxes just...

    Hows this look?

Nice color scheme! My suggestion: try white or matching yellow lettering ... or use outlines (white letters w/black outlines, or visa-versa). Be careful when you paint the real thing - yellow is a hard color to pull off in scale, many modelers go way overboard with over-saturated colors...
