    New scratch builder wanna-be

Welcome Tori! You might check out Build Your Own Main Street - free downloadable HO scale cardstock models of typical early 20th century urban American structures. Best of luck, and most importantly, have fun! :)

    Stolen Bridge!

Sure! It's the Waibaidu Bridge (aka Garden Bridge), a local landmark in Shanghai, and the first steel bridge constructed in China. After 100 years of service, it is being taken down and transported to a local shipyard for renovations, after which it will be re-installed. The photo shows the...

    Stolen Bridge!

I saw this in today's local paper and immediately thought of this thread. Tetters, for your next caper, maybe you should use a "stealth" tugboat. ;)

    question about this forum/website

From a potential advertiser's viewpoint, I wonder if the lack of promotion might not be as important as the volume of traffic. While this forum may not be widely promoted, it does appear to attract a significant amount of eyeballs and mouseclicks. I don't think there is any other English...

    de-laminating rivets?

Thanks for that great biro tip, as well as the one about painting the little stacks of discs as a single cylinder. Clever ideas! I am always looking for "mass production" techniques like that. When my screwpunch arrives, I'll try that one!

Surely you're not going to drop something like that without enlightening us? :)

Blog review of Fiddler's Green New England structures

Loren, that shouldn't be a problem, just print the parts pages at a different scale! I think ScaleScenes has a link on their home page explaining this.

    Broad Gauge modeling

Interesting and informative answers! Many factors I had not considered (HO scale link-and-pin couplers )! Now I'm surprised there's as much early steam as there is! :) Thanks for the insights, guys!

    Broad Gauge modeling

I've noticed this. Can you explain to a non-model railroader why this is? I love early steam, the technology is fascinating and so many of the locomotives are gorgeous. Yet it attracts so few modelers. It seems strange to me to pass over the era of Flying Scotsmans and Generals and Iron...

    This is HOT!(?)

Streetview is great for homesick Americans living abroad. :) I can "stroll" around my old stomping grounds. Google Earth is great fun, too, expecially if you download the full application which lets you tilt the plane of the earth - it looks much more realistic than the default "straight...

    1885 era warships

Yeah, there's one much larger - 1:1. :) It's somewhere in Shandong Province, China. Here's a link - the site's in Chinese, but there are plenty of photos. FYI, "TingYuen" is the name under the old spelling system, in modern Chinese it's DingYuan (which is much closer to what it sounds like).

    The real world is harsh

Matt, sorry to hear about all the difficulties. Could a pc sim ("Trainz" or "MS Train Simulator") help hold you over until you can get back into model railroading? Take care!

Free software that turns pictures into models!

Buying a camera won't make you a photographer. Owning a guitar won't make you a musician. Having a copy of Metasequoia won't make you a card designer. All these things are tools that help you do a job. While they are powerful tools indeed, they are worthless unless you first know some...

Railroad Terms Used in Common Speech

"He blew his stack" - is that from railroading, or steam technology in general?

    Steam history, anyone...?

    Very cool. thanks!

    weird tanks anyone?

Exactly. And you're sharing the cramped, tumbling dustbin with a red-hot engine. Probably fuel slopping everywhere because it's upside-down half the time. I think you'd be lucky to maneuver a "ball tank" across a parking lot, much less reconnoiter an enemy over broken terrain - and do...

    Steam history, anyone...?

Heh-heh, no ... I don't think that's it ... in the seven years I've lived here I've traveled by train personally. I've met countless other foreigners here, I've seen mounds of photos taken all over China, regularly read blogs by others living here ... and yet I have never met anyone who...

    Steam history, anyone...?

That sounds strange to me. The only place I've ever seen a steamer in China is the one sitting at the local museum. I may be wrong about this, but I think the only steam still in use is at a few remote mining operations way out in the hinterlands. The trains I see around here are all...
