    Carbon buildup between the plates where the brushes run on the commuter? That's a problem with the weak bachmann 44/70 tonner power truck (old type).

    I agree with Russ, that with Atherns, even their lower priced stuff is good. Real good quality, maybe lower on details and maybe not quite as "instrument" like.

    A can motor is sealed in a small metal can, but does not necessairly gaurantee quality. Best bet is to e-mail the seller and ask and/or stick to quality manufacturers and high end lines.     Life Like P2K is high end, but many consider Life Like (not P2K or P1K) train set quality. Bachman has a Spectrum series to compete with high end lines, and is far superior to train set quality, but IMHO not up to standard with some others. I have a lot of bachmann spectrums I bought because...

    I like to solder flex track before bending it. I have gone without joiners, but in most cases and for most people, it's probably best to use them. Best to stagger the joints, especially on curves. Be fast and the ties won't melt :O and it's a good idea to check the gauge after soldering.

    Larry, it's best to shoot at the largest image size, archive the original image, work from a copy and resize it with a program that allows you to adjust the compression. Xnview or The GIMP come to mind. The GIMP allows you to see the final file size before saving if you check the preview block...
