    Boston, North Station

Here's a quick update on my MBTA project! I've got 4 MBTA "screamer-class" F40PH locos all painted up and ready for windows and better lighting! Coming soon I'll have photos of my updated MBTA Comet coaches. I've carefully repainted all of my comets to the proper shade of purple! I now have...

    Prodigy advance^2 or prodigy wireless?

That's too bad...I have a nice Proto Maine Central S3 just begging to rumble Alco sounds! Oh well I've always wanted to have an S2. I really like the look of the blunt-style truck best. In New Hampshire we actually have three of the four types working in scenic rail! Hobo/Winnipesaukee...

    Prodigy advance^2 or prodigy wireless?

Thanks Squidbait! Glad to hear the wireless does not lack in features! I'll sell off a few more of my largescale items on ebay to help justify it! I'm a convicted ALCO-holic as well! Do you use sound on your models? If so any suggestions on sound systems that accurately portrait the Alco...

    Prodigy advance^2 or prodigy wireless?

Hi, Just curious if anyone has experience with these systems at all. I like the Price of the advance^2 better, but I don't know if I could be tethered like that or not....I currently have a wireless direct current system that's 100% flaw free! Is the prodigy wireless a reliable...

Sound and DCC for Proto SW9 ideas?

Hello, I'm very new to DCC.... My buddy just bought a Proto 2000 Sw9 loco at a train show today. The box indicates that there is no sound or DCC included but that it could be upgraded with some work. Which decoder and sound system would work best for this loco? He has the digitrax super...

History Channel - another Train Series!!!

Oh my gosh folks! Give the guy a break! The host is a real-life freight conductor for Pan Am Rail out of Waterville ME. Pan Am is a privately held railroad, union-free, and run like a shortline with realistic expectations. eg. Their newest locomotives are used GP40Ws from CN. Don't be...

What type of road bed do you use?

I have found similar foam to WS roadbed at Home Depot. This material is translucent blue and about 6-8 inches wide...and cheap! It seems to work great with flex track since it cancels out small imperfections in the sub bed. It comes in a nice width to more than cover dual track roadbeds...and...

    Atlas, Blue Line, or Genesis??

I had this trouble with recent Athearn RTR-series Guilford locomotives...the GP35 and GP40 have the same gray and orange, but the GP40 came with unpainted black trucks. The newer GP38-2 has a mucher darker gray but the same orange and gray trucks. (All made within the last couple years) Atlas...

    Atlas, Blue Line, or Genesis??

Hi all, I just received over the past week 2 Genesis SD70MACs. These are truly awesome looking engines, I can't get over how much larger they are than my other diesels (4 axle and 6 axle alike). The engines run nice and smooth and have plenty of pulling power. I love the lights!!!! The only...

    Atlas, Blue Line, or Genesis??

Russ, Thanks for the link, I'll keep it handy in case I have trouble! So far my Athearn units are ok electrically. I like the detail level on the RTR units such as the GP35s and 38s with wire grab irons etc...The GP35s also have microlamps which are awesome! My only complaint...noisy motors...

    Atlas, Blue Line, or Genesis??

Haha that's great to hear guys! csiguy, How is the sound on the blue line loco? Can it be turned off?...I've never been a huge fan of sound haha. I'm liking the new dark blue/yellow CSX paint scheme! I can't wait to come up with some doublestacks to justify them! But for now, I've got...

    Atlas, Blue Line, or Genesis??

Hi all, At some point in the future I'd like to replace my relatively new Athearn RTR GP40s for my Norfolk Southern coal train. I've recently been spoiled with smooth running Atlas BN U33C locos I bought used. The noisy Geeps just won't cut it anymore. I would use the U33s on the coal train...

Athearn Ready to Roll model questions

My GP38s from this year do not have directional microbulbs or DCC plug and play ready. The RTR GP35 and GP40X DO have directional microbulbs and are DCC plug and play ready.

    Glueing Foam Board to Benchwork

I use hot glue! I'm too impatient to wait for regular glue to dry! Just be careful you don't melt the foam too much...bad toxic fumes result! Be sure to have plenty of ventilation.

Kato F40ph...Only available in RTA and Amtrak Phase 3?

Fred, You bring great ideas to the table. I have no problem speaking up to the manufacturers, I can certainly forward a list to Kato. Are there any other roadnames they should consider? And Yes, Walthers has a nice selection....I currently have 7 Walthers F40PH locos...I really like...

Kato F40ph...Only available in RTA and Amtrak Phase 3?

In my quick google search I found a number... F40PH-2C....64'3" over the coupler faces. My Walthers F40PH is 56'6" over the coupler faces. A difference of 8 feet! That's huge!

Kato F40ph...Only available in RTA and Amtrak Phase 3?

Thanks Diburning...I think you've mentioned this to me before in my North Station thread. I'm not a super-die hard for 100% accuracy in my models...but it seems more and more that there is a significant difference. Has any manufacturer produced the F40PH-2C yet? If not are there any plans...

Kato F40ph...Only available in RTA and Amtrak Phase 3?

Right on... While I would buy a Phase 4 Amtrak F40ph, I am mainly interested in the commuter rail schemes. Any of these roadnames with living F40PH would be great! Coaster CalTrain Metra MBTA Via NJT CSX ACE But especially MBTA...with the new paint scheme...

Kato F40ph...Only available in RTA and Amtrak Phase 3?

Hi all, Does anyone know why, or have any ideas why Kato has such a slim selection of F40PH locomotives? I'd love to buy a couple engines for my layout since I hear they are great. BUT I'm SO not thrilled about painting over a $90 model! Didn't BOTH of those paint schemes die years ago?

    Working cars and roadways?

Wow that little VW is amazing! That might be something I could consider getting into! I love my trains, but I do not plan to operate them like most people. I have my layout ready for complete automated control. My layout will constantly shuffle trains into and off of the track giving...
