    why is that??????

I played with the train some more this morning trying some of your suggestions without coming to any conclusion. Now I am wondering if it is the coupler on the Atlas RS-40 that doesn't move enough in one direction. This evening, after work, I will try a different engine and see what happens...

    why is that??????

It's a 40' boxcar with plastic wheels. I checked the curve radius at 18". I suspect it has something to do with the coupler. It "appears" that the coupler will not pivot equally in both directions. Those little plastic horn couplers are spring actuated to one side but I will try all your...

    why is that??????

I have an HO box car that derails on a particular flextrack curve that I just laid down. It runs just fine if I turn the whole train consist around and run it in the opposite direction. Why is that? I can't seem to notice anything suspicous about the track.

Too stupid to lay flextrack !!!!!

Gosh, I don't know what happened to my previous reply. I must have done something wrong. At any rate, thanks for all the great advice on how to install flextrack. I have a little more confidence now. In fact, I soldered a couple of pieces together using flux as suggested and that works great. I...

Too stupid to lay flextrack !!!!!

This may seem like a dumb question but would you consider laying flextrack a two man job? My only experience with track recently is Bachmann EZ track which is of course sectional track and just snaps together. On the other hand, when I attempt to curve a 36 inch long piece of flextrack track it...

    Help Repairing Loco

You said, "the motor seems to get stuck. It will spin half a rotation and freeze. Any suggestions? Yes, I had a great suggestion because this sounds exactly like an old Mantua motor that is in an engine that I acquired recently. I sprayed it several times with " CRC QD Contact Cleaner" ( from...

My daughter informed me that the hoax went around the Internet three years ago. I was really disappointed when I found out that is was a hoax. I was feeling kind a "special" and now I feel-------------

Help me fix my Mantua 0-4-0

Final report--I ran the Mantua 0-4-0 again this morning and I immediately had to back off on the throttle as the little engine now picks up speed rapidly. I attached a consist of 4 cars and a caboose suspecting that it would have trouble pulling but it didn't seem to make any difference. As a...

Help me fix my Mantua 0-4-0

I sprayed some more of the CRC QD Contact Cleaner on the engine per the instructions and ran it again the next morning. I must have really cleaned parts as I was hearing "squeaking" as the 0-4-0 engine moved around the track. It kept picking up speed to a point where I had to back off the...

Help me fix my Mantua 0-4-0

I sprayed some electrical contact cleaner on the motor last night and ran it some more without any improvement. I found the same websites with the diagram describing the parts of an electric DC motor. It took me forever to find a website with a picture of a real motor and indentification of its'...

Help me fix my Mantua 0-4-0

Thanks for a plan of action-------- Thanks for all the advice. I ran the little engine again today for quite a while; maybe 30 minutes. It only moves at full throttle which you said not to do. I think what I need now is a diagram of an electric motor so I can learn the parts of an electric...

Help me fix my Mantua 0-4-0

It works now--------- When I run into a model railroad problem that I can't solve, I have found that it is best to quit for the day and approach the problem the next day. So this morning, I disassembled the Manuta 0-4-0 again to inspect the "inner workings". I am not sure exactly what I did...

Help me fix my Mantua 0-4-0

Sunday, I purchased a used Mantua 0-4-0 at the Cincinnati Train Show. When I got a chance to try it out at home it ran sporadically and then stopped. I took it apart and tested the engine and was delighted to see it run just fine---full rpm. I cleaned, lubricated and checked a wire that runs...

    egyptian model railroading

Hey, you ought to buy a train set on eBay. It would include an engine, cars, caboose, train and a transformer. I guess the only thing you would have to check is the voltage. I am not sure what your electrical system is in effect in Egypt. I am sure a seller on eBay would be delighted to ship to...

    Track Gaps

Gaps bug me too but I have found that they really are not a problem---so far. The problem that I have found with Bachmann EZ track is the improper fit of the rail joiners. If you're having a problem with your train running off the track you might have a rail joiner that is installed wrong. Run...

    What's the difference?

What's the difference between a K4 4-6-2 (pre-war with Slat Pilot) and (post-war with modern pilot)? I have looked at pictures of the steam locomotives side by side and for the life of me can not see a difference. Am I blind? It's like one of those puzzles that you see in the comic strip where...

    No more GM cars?

GMs problem is a 1980s contract with the UAW that provides excellant health care and pension benefits for its employee. This contract was agreed upon when GM enjoyed 50% of the market. Now GM only has 25% of the market thanks to the free trade agreement and all the foreign competition and cannot...

    Using Real Water

Boy, this is almost like a challenge. I keep thinking about a waterfall that I built on the back porch patio. I formed a small concrete pond in a garden hole. Then I put it on the back patio and stacked up slabs of limestone to allow water to flow down into the pond and be recirculated back up...
