    WalMart

I've got a bunch of the Walmart cars, and spent a chunk of time this weekend swapping wheels around - you don't even have to take the body apart to pop them off, and I think it's a nice way to have more of these inexpensive cars without them just being duplicated. As I model the modern era, I...

Wouldn't that be the roller coaster ride @ Disneyland?

    Mac Users?

I'm a Mac user through and through - G4 and iMac at home, new G5 dual process here at work - and I use Windows XP daily here, through Parallels - it works great. You can have Windows run in it's own window on the Mac desktop, or go to full screen mode & it's just like any other PC.

    What makes a layout "realistic"?

There are lots of detailing issues that blend together to form a realistic scene, but I think there are a few overidding principals that have a lot of impact and should be kept in mind. One of these, and it has been mentioned, is overall blending of the elements. This really helps make a...

    N scale 2 by's

Another way to deal with 2x4 framed walls in N scale would be draw the framing either by hand or on a computer, then reduce it to make patterns and photo etch the parts. You could glue these to the backside of very thin sheathing for finished walls (only worth the effort if it'll be seen), our...

    Speakin' of paper models...

I agree, it is clever - the kits designer created the ironwork for the roof in two colors - tan (as per prototype) with black in the spaces, or also in green, to be printed on transparency. I think this is a pretty useful technique for other things we might want to build, to. I've seen an...

    Proto:87

Check this link out: PROTO:87 STORES AND ACCURATE MODEL RAILROAD TRACK I am so on the fence about this - overly wide wheels don't really bother me, but the HUGE (comparatively) gap at open points in switches really annoys me; I'm kind of a track fanatic. If I were planning just a smallish...

    Hi - Tech Railfanning

I do it all the time. There are also several bridges over various parts of the yard, offering great vantage points.

    Hi - Tech Railfanning

This is a pretty cool thread, so I'll give this a try too (I've been looking at these satellite pics for a few years, and never even noticed the 'link this page' feature. This link is to the first section of my future RR empire, and I plan on starting this area, as a series of Freemo modules...

    Speakin' of paper models...

Here's a link to a free download that I thought was pretty cool, and might be of some use on model RR layouts with some weathering - the download includes good directions and builds into the Haunted Mansion from Disneyland, though most people probably would just view the model, devoid of it's...

    Google Earth

I was playing with Google Earth this morning, and (with a little Photoshop), made a quick version of my dream model railroad that I thought you'd all enjoy.

    Which regions/areas do you model?

I also model the US southwest, albeit in a contemporary timeframe and very limited in scope - my interests lie within a roughly 15 mile square suburban-industrial area of Southern California, very near to where I grew up and saw quite often as a kid - and still do now.

Coloring Steel Bands for Water Tanks and Barrels

I agree, great idea. Printers and Photoshop are very powerful, and I think underused, for our hobby.

    HO Scale Re-Bar??????

Another idea for the rebar might be to use aluminum window screen. You could fold it into rectangular or roll into tubular shapes to approximate structural rebar work before the concrete forms have gone up, or create some simple styrene forms and make real poured in place concrete work with...

When wood carving becomes (became?) scale modelling

I came across this website looking for steel mill images, and find the work absolutely amazing. These models are all carved wood and ivory, and the level of detail appears outstanding. If I ever find myself in Ohio, I'll have to make a trip to the museum to see in person...

    Miscellaneous HO scenery

I've also seen the thread with the scratchbuild DeLorean, but I don't remember what forum it was on. It looked pretty cool - the builder cut the parts out of thin aluminum sheet, and folded it to form the body.

    Union Pacific Modelers...

You could say that I'm a UP modeller, though I'd contend that I'm an SP modeller in the UP era:) Most of my built models are in various states of storage for the time being, as I'm in somewhat of a moving situation, but I still find time to railfan & have plenty of UP pics (never enough)...
