    foam vs balsa?

Yes, the blue and pink extruded polystyrene foams are pretty strong - the way their made has a self-skinning effect, which creates a structure akin to a honeycomb panel; don't try that last photo with the expanded polystyrene bead stuff - unless it's a foot thick!

    the "art" of modeling "sound"

I plan to use small speakers (or huge ones, relative to those used inside locomotives) to playback industry-specific soundtracks at appropriate locations, as well as low-level 'neighbourhood' sounds where appropriate. As for smell, I've toyed with the idea of cutting off 6" of an old railroad...

    foam vs balsa?

Do a Google search for Austin TX plastics or try plastics supply. Laird Plastics has 1.5" x 48x96 2lb pink foam on their site, they might have other thicknesses in stock.

What topic would you like to know more about?

What's the name of that layout - I'd like to see what I can find on the web about it; I remember seeing an article in MR a few years ago, and would like to know more about how the operating cars and trucks work - I assume it's the Faller magnetic wire in the streets system.

    Golden Valley module

You could always paint over them, as per this example: "let's Get Drunk And Go Stripe Some Road!" - AMERICAN ROAD® FORUM—the ultimate road trip community. Copyright AMERICAN ROAD, LLC 2006-2007 Actually, road lines need to be removed from time to time on full scale roads as well, for a variety...

    the "art" of modeling "sound"

It can be much simpler in a yard on servicing facility, where you've got a cluster of motive power in one general vicinity; a single subwoofer can provide the lower frequencies to that entire area (still at relatively low volume), and the on-board sound systems will allow individual engines to...

The Many Uses of Wax Paper

I'm rather fond of the way you guys spell colour, and this use of lorry, lift, and bonnet (in leiu of truck, elevator, and hood, respectively), are all just dandy. But every time I hear the word aluminium... it's just crazy talk! I mean, you've added an extra syllable to a perfectly fine word. sign1

    CSX...Please 'splain....

Josh mentions the I15, so I presume the steeper grades he refers to is on the highway itself, not the rail lines. Regarding the efficiency of locomotives moving large amounts of weight over long distances, it's definetly possibly as a result of economy of scale; the Class 1's have been making...

    DC or DCC??

Even for a small, fairly simple switching layout, I like DCC for the CV's - full control of sound, lights per the rulebook, and momentum are like another level of detail for me.

    Economic Stimulas Check

Not so much - I'd say it's more like a little perk your credit card company might offer to keep you happily spending and maintaining a balance, and not try to get a lower interest rate (or in this case, lower taxes), so that the money could have stayed in your pocket from the beginning...

Do You Model the Alaska RR?

A little bit - I bought one of the Bachmann McKinley Explorer sets as a kid, and I still have it as a someday superdetailing project. I've collected a bunch of reference pics over the years. I plan on building a diorama of the bridge at Hurrican Gulch and adjacent landscape to display it on.

    Golden Valley module

Good looking trackwork & modules, Ulf. I'm glad to read of your experience with handlaying the track with the tieplates and deciding to switch to the MicroEngineering track - I've looked into the P:87 Stores products as I think tie plates (and retaining clips) are an important detail that is...

    Economic Stimulas Check

I used most of mine for bills, but I did use a porting of it to "stimulate" the economy and support local business - and walked out of my LHS with a shiny new Athearn Genesis SD75I decorated for BNSF.

    American Made ?????

Another reason I've found that many Europeans, and it seems Germans in particular, are interested in the Southwest is that the landscape is so different than anything they're accustomed to - densly packed cities, mountains, valleys and trees cause for a lot of curving roads and blocked views. If...

structures for end use of mine ore and quarry rock

The railroad itself is also a big user of gravel / crushed aggregate, for their track base; ballast. You could model a MOW ballast train, and even model a reballasting or other track improvement scene, which would give that train somewhere to go.

    Painting road stripes

Once you have the stripes masked off, you could also try dabbing the paint on with a sponge, to suggest worn markings that have begun to peel away and need repainting, like these:

    Painting road stripes

I'd go the masking tape route, but I'd Dullcoat & seal the road first, to protect the weathering. Depending on how detailed you want your striping to be, or what era / local it's for, you could use a combination of masking tape and Chartpack tape to create controlled spacing between double...

    New to Miami

I've made a recent transcontinental move, Southern CA to South FL, and now that I'm getting settled in, the question on my mind is, "what's the best model rr store around Miami?" I see a few listed @ the back of MR and on Google, but does anyone from the area have any opinions? A store...
