    Anybody know what these are?

One of the things that caught my eye in the photos I linked to was the street running in Colton; for everyone not familiar with the are, this is east of the main UP (former SP) West Colton yards. There's a wye, the 'tail' of which is the Riverside branch. The first several blocks of the branch...

    Anybody know what these are?

Some of these windmills travel in dedicated "windmill tranis", and I think I've just found myself a new modelling project: http://www.westcoastrailforums.com/view_topic.php?id=1446&forum_id=92 And Mountain Man, that forum links to this site...

    Rails Stolen From The E.B.T.R.R

They steal the rails because they're literally not shocked by it - unlike the morons that fried themselves a few blocks from my house in downtown San Bernandino last year - while stealing live copper cable out of an underground transformer vault.

    What about a Depot thread

If anybody has any pictures, or maybe lives in the area and wants to take some, of the UP depot at Nyssa, OR, it's a very cool structure - on the small side (nice size for a model), and streamlined art deco finished in glazed terra cotta tile.

That's a nice looking modern load.

What made you realize model trains were more than just toys?

I was 12 and my mom took me to a used book sale at the library. I picked up a worn copy of Model Railroader & poured through the issue over and over again, amazed by the beautiful detail work and highly crafted models. It was the 10/91 issue with an article wrapping up Dean Freytag's article on...

    Plywood vs. Humidity

Here's what I've come up with as far as creating a Freemo compliant module with an aluminum frame for minimal cost (that's minimal cost for an aluminum frame, not necessarily compared to other techniques / materials). The endplate is 1/8" aluminum plate reinforced with a 1"x1/8" flatbar welded...

    Plywood vs. Humidity

I'm drawing up an aluminum frame to FREEMO standards - I'll post some drawings soon. I'm also looking into some more ideas on the adjustable legs.

    Plywood vs. Humidity

This is a totally modular system, so it's no problem to scale it from 2'x4' to 2'x6'. There are a lot of different ways to attach legs, but I think your method, railwaybob, would be applicable here as well - the T-nut would be replaced with a 6061-T6 (stronger alloy) nut welded to the inside...

    USS Tarawa LHA1 1/200

Absolutely amazing modelling - the hovercraft and AFV's are wonderful little masterpieces by themselves - and they're just a miniscule detail!!!

    Plywood vs. Humidity

It's not a totally crazy idea - I've been thinking of doing something along these lines myself - it helps that I run a metal shop :thumb: I just put together a quick visualization of a 2'x4' module, framed in 1-1/2"x1-1/2"x1/8" 6061 aluminum angle with 1/8"x1" flatbar supports and shear bracing...

    Plywood vs. Humidity

The foam is stable and very strong (it has a honeycomb nature to it - the self-skinning nature of the material results in a poroduct with a continuous film coating on the top and bottom, with the cellular structure inside), and has a lot of advantages as far as carvability, easy mounting of...

Off Topic: A pioneer died this morning

He was always entertaining, and I think had a great view and understanding of things. I saw him perform at the MGM in Vegas a few years back, great show.

    San bernardino line questions

I know it's been a while since this post was made, and I'm not sure if MetroDodger has visited the Gauge recently, but this month's issue if Model Railroader has a nice article by Gary Hoover on scratch-building a model of the San Bernardino station - an excellant model, and very good technique.

    Smelter/slag dump ideas

Interesting. Will Bruder is a well known architect in Phoenix - one of his his buildings, I believe it's called the Deer Creek Rock Art Center, is built of tilt-up concrete panels with a deep burgandy slag aggregate finish. The slag all came from the mine / smelter at Superior, AZ. Nachoman...

    the "art" of modeling "sound"

Yes, I think the key to adding any type of atmospheric is the ability to remove it.

My idea for switches - comments?

I've done some drawing and scaling, and determined that 1:12 scale is just right for these guys. They'll be big enough to stand up to all kinds of abuse, and I'll make the target and extension easy to replace, if need be.

A Treasure Trove of Information for Track Fanatics

My idea for switches - comments?

I've been designing a modular HO scale model rr, and I've come up with an idea for manual switch control that I'm so excited about, I can't believe I haven't seen it done already, and i like your comments. Automated and dispatcher-controlled turnouts will be actuated by under-the-layout switch...
