    Suggestions for Switcher

If you do go diesel, best bet would be a Stewart VO-660 or VO-1000, or maybe an Atlas RS-1. Both were in your era (c.1940-42). Many railroads first diesels were switchers by the way. I think Stewart may even make one or both VO's in Pennsy paint scheme?? Either their website or Walthers' should...

    Diesel Suggestions

How early a time period are you looking at?? The Atlas Alco RS-1, Stewart VO-660/VO-1000 go back to 1940-41 timeframe and are excellent models. Stewart's FT's were available ptd as the FT-103 demonstrators that travelled around in 1939-40 (or you could get undecs and paint them yourself, that's...

    Sounds: Whistle and Chugga-Chugga

You might want to look into some of the things MRC has offered, they had (I think they don't make it anymore, but hobby shops/ebay should have it) a thing that you wired between your powerpack and the track, it produced either a chug/whistle or diesel rumble/horn sound depending on which (steam...

    18 inch radius

Instead of matchbox cars, look at LifeLike SceneMaster autos and trucks - nice looking and cheap, easily available at most any hobby shop, plus they're perfect for your era as they are models of 1940's-50's cars. www.lifelikeproducts.com/trains/scenemaster/hovehicles.htm

    Steam Locomotive Help

I have a Spectrum 4-6-0 (high driver) that runs quite well, but I find on my layout it's limit is about 3 passenger cars, but on a perfectly flat layout could probably do 5. Model Power is making some of the old Mantua engines again, they are offering a 4-6-2 which is well under $100 and should...

    Looking for AHM products

Seems like every RR flea market I go to here (Mpls-St.Paul area) there's some AHM stuff floating around, usually quite cheap.

    Pennsy K4 Streamlined?

I'm pretty sure it's been done in brass !! Might be nice idea for someone now making a "regular" K-4 (like Spectrum or Broadway Limited) to think about. BTW Lionel made a streamlined 2-6-2 steam loco back in the 30's based on a streamlined K-4.

    Digitrax and BLI

I know this affected the earliest BLI 4-6-4's, I have an early one and had some trouble programming it because of the power problem. (I couldn't get it to take a 4-digit ID no, but was OK with two-digits for example.) My understanding is that this has been 'fixed' by BLI on later models?? I also...

    Passenger car advice needed

"They're 60' cars, so if you're a rivet-counter, forget it." Actually that isn't true...the coach and combine are quite accurate models of C&NW's "Utility Coach" and "Utility Combine" cars, which were really only 60' long. They were used on branch lines and sometimes to fill out mainline...

    Dependable Locomotive

There are a lot of good medium-priced four axle diesels out there, I've had a Spectrum GP-30 since 1988 that still runs great and is a good puller. Life-Like / Proto 1000 is good (just got their Alco RS-11) too. BTW if you do get into airbrushing, I would try to find an undecorated unit...

    Ore car recommendations

Sorry !! :p Pennsy ore cars I was thinking of are made by Stewart not Bowser. Should be exactly what you're looking for (??) http://www.greenwayproducts.com/buy_stewart_ore.htm

    Ore car recommendations

Well if you're in HO, you might want to check the Bowser Pennsy ore cars, would assume that's what would have been used by PRR. The Walthers cars are "Minnesota" cars, used in...well, Minnesota!! The MDC ones are modelled after the type used in Upper Michigan - a little higher and a little...

    Passenger car advice needed

I find the IHC cars are similar to Rivarossi - a plus is they have more separate details (like railings/grab irons) but a negative is they tend to be a little wobbly sometimes. One or two IHC cars took a little work to get to sit perfectly upright. Both Rivarossii and IHC have nice interiors you...
