    seeking short passenger cars

Walthers / Rivarossi offers an RPO, Baggage, Utility Coach and Utility Combine that are each 60' long - just like their prototypes. Athearn makes (if I remember right) a 63' RPO, 67' Baggage, and 72' Coach that are prototypical length. They also offer a Diner, Pullman, and Obs car that are 72'...

    Life-like or Bachmann train set?

p.s. the Bachmann / Spectrum sets come with a 22" radius oval of E-Z track, and the one with the Spectrum N&W "J" steam engine has an engine that is DCC equipped.

    Life-like or Bachmann train set?

Not sure if someone answered this, but I believe Athearn train sets come with Bachmann "E-Z Track", nickel silver code 100 with built in roadbed. Bachmann offers several train sets in their "Spectrum" line, which is their top of the line stuff, Spectrum engines etc. are very good and would be...

    Is HO a standad scale?

I think a starter set that includes track w/ roadbed from Bachmann or Atlas would be a great way to start, makes things a lot easier. I think Bachmann and Athearn both sets come with Bachmann track. Right now I'd say Atlas code 83 track w/roadbed is more realistic looking, but Bachmann has many...

    Yard Switching?

You might want to pick up the Kalmbach book on Yards, it's a good primer of all things yard-wise.

    00 vs Ho?

Long story short - HO scale/guage was first created many years ago in Germany by Marklin, with a scale of 3.5mm = 1 foot or 1:87. This scale caught on quite well on the continent and in the USA, but in Britain, they were unable to fit a motor into a UK locomotive built to that scale, so they...

    local railroad modellers???

Well...I kinda used to !! I lived 1958-1982 along the Minneapolis Northfield and Southern high line in Richfield MN (actually still live there, the line was bought by Soo Line, then CP Rail, now Progressive Rail). I did set out c.1983-84 to model the MN&S, but before I got very far switched to a...

Train Miniatures - Good or What?

Train Miniature = Walthers (sort of)...Walthers bought Train Miniatures in about 1985-86 and began producing the Train Miniature line as "Walthers". So...if you're familiar with Walthers 40' woodside reefer and like them, this is the same kit. I think Walthers' versions had a little bit better...

    Enginehouse colors

Go to www.mtmuseum.org and click on "Jackson Street Roundhouse" and you'll see it's interior is light green. That was very common for RR building interiors, and for passenger car and caboose interiors. If you're specifically modelling a CPR building, might want to check with the Canadian...

Help with winter modeling snow scenes

Using plaster as snow would work if you want to model just huge snowdrifts, but snow I've seen rarely looks that uniform and smooth. I think it's more realistic to have at least some areas where a little yellow/green grass shows thru the snow. Several companies make powdery white snow granules...

Need some info re: correct engine for logging line

Yes !! I was just going to suggest the Spectrum 4-6-0. Most logging operations were not very well funded, and used whatever they could get cheap. I've seen pictures from the '20's of 4-4-0's, 2-6-0's etc. being used, some clearly 30-40+ years old. As steel cars came in (both freight and...

    NE Minnesota NW Wisconsin modelers

Well I don't live in the area (I'm in Richfield MN) but my model railroad is set on the north shore of Lake Superior, the St.Paul Duluth and Canadian RR. Are you by chance a member of the DMIR Historical Society?? I'll be at their convention in Proctor in August, maybe I'll see you there.

    Cork or Foam road bed

Does anyone actually make "foam roadbed"?? Woodland Scenics makes foam subroadbed, but you use that under your cork or other roadbed. It isn't roadbed itself. I use WS foam under Ribbonrail pre-formed upsom-board roadbed.

    I broke my new loco.

It may be a Kadee "clone" rather than an actual Kadee coupler?? If it isn't going back together I suspect it would be easier to just replace it.

    newbie with a loudness question

I suspect the sound is amplified thru the baseboard and walls. You might want to look into Woodland Scenics subroadbed foamstrips - I was surprised at how even 1/2" of foam under the track and roadbed made things a lot quieter.

    Opinion on Walthers code 83

By the time I dropped O scale and started building an HO layout (early 1988) Walthers code 83 was already around and was quickly replacing code 100 as the 'industry standard'. I think a few HO items from Rivarossi or other foreign manufacturers continued to have deeper flanges, but they usually...

    Replacing broken turnouts

This is a good example of why it's not a good idea to glue down track to the roadbed !! Turnouts do wear out over time and need replacement.
