    Newbie: Misc.Thoughts

Cheetah, some answers: Use the 'Search' function of the Gauge! 1. The instruction to post pictures are here. 2. Sure you can paint your rolling stock - but you'll have to decide what and how you paint your models - spray painting, brush painting, what type of colors, weathering yes or no...

    weathering rail

BerraF: This is looking really good! :thumb: 8) Andrew: You are right! I never thought about this aspect of dirt/grease/grime distribution along the track. Since Swiss railroads are (almost) 100% electrified, here we see much 'cleaner' track than in dieselized countries. I'll do some...

    weathering rail

As an addition: A few remarks about rust-painting turnouts: Try NOT to get paint between the switch points and the stock rails (--> WHITE arrow). This is e.g. quite important for PECO electro-frog turnouts. On the other hand, the inner sides of the switch points SHOULD be rust colored and not...

    weathering rail

There are a lot of methods to weather your rails, but they all boil down more or less to the recipe: Paint the rails a rust color. But then there are many ways to do that - here is my preferred method: Since I hate the overspray from an airbrush which is ALWAYS dispersed across the whole room...

    HOn3 Goose

Look into the line of ROCO Minitanks H0 models. They have some US military trucks, e.g. GMC, M35... which could be used for kitbashing a goose. Price range $15-20 Ron

    Model Power products?

It seems that different manufacturing dates of MP locos stand for quite a different quality. I have each a powered and a dummy set of Baldwin Sharknoses , A and B units. So I can make up an A-B-B-A lashup with two motorized engines. I bought them in the '70s for about $30 (powered) and $15...

    Hi I just joined

Nice to have you on board, Ron - one more Gauger called Ron!:mrgreen::mrgreen: Somewhere I read that people in the vicinity of the TH&B nicknamed the line "To Hell & Back". Well I hope your stay here is more in the lines of "to Heaven and back", because there's a bunch of nice guys...

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

The only truly Swiss H0e (or H0n30, if you prefer) models were manufactured by Liliput, which today are part of 'Bachmann Europe'. This was a tiny 0-6-0T steam engine for the Waldenburgerbahn, the 'Gedeon Thommen' (which is still going strong as a tourist attraction). Liliput still produces H0e...

Hah, Feb already. How about your new paint job or road?

A little bit of paint disguises the toy-like shine of cheap plastic cars. Here are two freight cars of my Trim Creek & Western RR (standard gauge division) I painted and weathered - a double door boxcar and a gondola. The big TCW logos were free-hand-painted to the car sides. Ron

    Question on Scales

Just to throw in another scale - in my opinion this could have been the most logical scale of them all, at least in the metric world. Shortly after WW II a Swiss manufacturer brought out model trains in 1:100 scale. At the time model railroading was a fast growing hobby, and using this scale...

On3 vs On30...where do you get track?

Hi Robert, welcome aboard the Gauge! (Now we are already two Swiss - AND both in 3ft narrow gauge! :thumb:) Concerning 3ft snap track (0n3 or H0n3) I fear you are completely out of luck. I have been in narrow gauge modeling for more than 25 years now, and I never saw anything like that. So you...

    Frozen door locks.

Gil, another trick is to smear the rubber seals with glycerine (glycerol). Cheap to get and works like a charm. If you want you can apply it to your tires, too. They become black and glossy - just like a car in a dealer's showroom. :D Ron

    My layout progress

Dennis Do you really use MATTE medium? I always thought that one should use acrylic GLOSS medium to model water - and from your pictures the water surface looks shiny and not flat, like the designation "matte medium" suggests. Could you enlighten me a bit about this? I'm just curious...

    H0e starter sets

Availability might be quite different whether you live in Europe or in America (or even down under). Where do you live? For questions like this one, it helps when you enter your homebase in your profile so that it shows up at the left of your post... To your question: Theres another German...

    My layout progress

Denyons, welcome to the Gauge! I don't know what graphics program you are using to resize your pictures. Resizing to 640x480 pixels is ok, but if a pic contains many details the file size still is too big. Now when you start saving a pic, you should be able to change some settings concerning...

    Reading RS-3's on the Hillside

Great weathering again! And I love the trackside landscape - those rock outcroppings are just fabulous! But please tell your LPB conductor, at least the caboose could use a little bit of water. I tink that MY LPBs flatly would refuse to work in such a run-down, dirty crummy! :D:D:D Ron

    Is this right?

This should work ok - both turnouts are thrown at the same time. And you don't need any special wires for that. The wires provided with the switch machine will do. This arrangement will be very practical for a crossover from one track to another parallel track - either both turnouts are set for...
