    when to solder?

I just noticed that I neglected to mention the use of rosin core solder and non acid flux. I see that Pooh Bah added that info. This is one of the great things about The Gauge. You get enough input to cover all the bases.

    Power District Layout Question, DCC

I'm not sure that there is enough info in your post for someone to help. Can you provide a track plan. With DCC you have different requirements than with the older DC block system.

    when to solder?

I have tried soldering the rail connections after they are in place and also before. If doing the latter, make sure you have your rail fitted and the rail ends and connectors secure. When doing the soldering with the rail in its final position, make sure to avoid melting the ties and use a...

Finally, the "Pictures at 11:00" or quick, Noah, get the boat...

Looks good to me, Wayne. Maybe I'm not as critical as you are. The only way to prevent "looking at the same old water" in your photo's would be to use real water and we know that isn't practical. I think you have done an excellent job with a viable alternative to real water.

    Gondola's?

I wonder if the open top gondola's used for coal hauling aren't unloaded with a rotary dumper, where the entire car is turned upside down? Anybody know for sure? Covered hopper's are used for grain hauling in this area of the world.

Plaster of Paris and Sculptamold Playtime

A limited amount of time on your part and a limited amount of time for the plaster equals "don't mix a bucket full". Try a small amount as an experiment. Spread it on a piece of cardboard and work it around until you feel it start to set up. That's going to be your maximum work time.

    Suspending layouts from the ceiling.

There was considerable discussion on your subject here about a year ago. I believe the individual who wanted to do the suspended layout was in Australia. I can't remember what the outcome was. Did you try a search on The Gauge?

    Just getting started

Ron: Welcome, I'll bet we have all had one of those layouts, or at least started one. Isn't experience great? Trouble is, when you get all of that experience, nobody wants to hear about it. As for your Y and D comment, we had a fellow at work years ago who gained that nickname. He had no...

    Drawer glides for controller shelf

Ace Hardware, Home Depot, Lowes. There is usually an instruction sheet with them. As for clearances; the width of the glides plus your shelf width will be the determining factor. Just looking at my keyboard drawer, it looks like 1/2 inch is needed on each side for the slides but there may be...

what do non railroaders think of your layout?

I guess I've had most of the above reactions plus a few more. How about "oh, look at the cute little trains" or "I would never have the patience for that". Just goes to show you that we have a hobby that isn't for everybody. Is it us or the rest of society thats nuts?

    Home made Ballast

Unless you are (a) building a really huge layout, (b) a person who likes a challenge or (c) someone who likes starting with the basics, my personal thought is that it sounds like a lot of work. Like many other things in life, it can be done. Have fun

    Gondola's?

I see them quite frequently here in Montana, on BNSF freights, hauling steel rolls. Also occasional loads of pilings and long steel I beams.

    capacitor?

It might work, but shouldn't be necessary for the conditions you describe. The capacitor will give an initial burst of current when it discharges but wouldn't help if the loco didn't clear the bad spot in the track. You would still get jerky operation. My thought is that it would be easier to...

    live by train tracks?

Spent a night in a state park in Whitefish,MT. It was right at the point where the diesels started to accelerate as they left town. Not much sleep that night. Conversely, I lived in a large city near an airport and got used to the approach noises of jets to the point that I didn't notice...

    Ground Color

My approach to the color question was to go to the local hardware store and say "give me a quart of your cheapest, dirt brown , flat, latex wall paint". After painting, I used Woodland Scenics earth tone burnt umber as a highlighting medium. I applied the burnt umber with a foam brush and wiped...

    Happy New Year

I'll add my best wishes for "A HAPPY NEW YEAR' to all of the folks on the gauge. I spent the eve working on my On30 module. How's that for getting off to the right start?
