    Plywood vs. Humidity

riverotter: Thanks for the clarification. Just a different name for something very simple. I like simple. Kinda goes along with my personality. Jim K.

    Plywood vs. Humidity

riverotter: I guess I'm confused by the term domino modules. Can you or someone else explain that to me? Are you building a layout that will be transportable? Sorry for the confusion. (I'm easily confused). Jim K.

    Plywood vs. Humidity

3/4 inch plywood is way overkill. Heavy, heavy, heavy, if as you say, you are building modular. How do you folks in the midwest build kitchen cabinets? Do they warp too? As for being concerned about the blue subsurface of foam, it won't be seen if you use a earth tone latex paint over it. It...

    Is this NORMAL?

A long time ago I learned that plastic train sets are not the greatest thing to buy when starting out in model railroading. I bought one for my son. "Marginal" probably describes them in most respects.

    Alternatives to soldering track

After you get the flux situation under control, make sure that , as mentioned above, you have a sufficiently high wattage soldering iron. The solder should flow into the connectors, not lump up on the surface of the rail. Very little solder will be required to make a solid joint and you won't...

    O Scale - Bad idea??

That's one big piece of equipment. Someone donated an HO version to our club. We use it for static display and run it occasionally. It won't pull much without spinning its wheels. Kinda light.

    Reminiscing-First Train Set

My first train set was a Marx 0-4-0 with, I believe, four cars. An oval of track and two switches. My older brother bought it for me in December of 1941. He had just returned from his first trip to the Orient as a merchant seaman. The ship made it into Puget Sound by running blacked out, the...

    foam vs balsa?

I have used cork roadbed, foam roadbed (Woodland Scenics) and no roadbed at all on foam insulation. No problem with any of the three. There is no necessity for balsa or other wood structure under the track if you use insulation foam. I'm currently working on a module that uses one inch by one...

    Old Photo's

Here are some old B&W photo's that I took in 1954 or thereabouts. My first venture into railfanning with my new cheapy 35mm camera. Please, will someone delete this thread. I have been attempting to add photo's for over an hour. I cannot go to "advanced" I cannot edit the post to delete it...

    Hello and questions

I've mentioned this before so if you have read it in another thread, consider it old info. I suggest that you don't start a grade with a rail joint. You will find that you end up with a sharp change of grade rather than a gradual increase. Play with a piece of flextrack on the table so that...

    Have I Plateaued (Rolling Stock)?

I reached a plateau with my buying also. I've put a moratorum on locomotive purchases and I'm very selective on car acquisitions. Being a logging railroader, I don't have a reason to buy many reefers or tank cars. Of course there's always the expense of scenery materials but thats minimal...

    We've lost another friend.

Kim: My condolences. I had planned to get together with Shane this summer if I made a visit the Spokane area. I tracked Shane's medical progress this past winter and assumed that he was recovering. So much for assumptions. God Bless.

    Off Topic - Batteries/rant.....

I found that the cost of replacement batteries for my first cordless drill were almost the same price (for two) as it would cost to buy a complete replacement drill with batteries.

Are There Any "Good" Model Railroad Magazines?

I subscribe to RMC and buy MR at the magazine stand. I do find some repetition in articles but you have to remember that there are always new people who want basic info. Just look at the threads here on the Gauge that ask the same questions week after week. I find that there is something new...

    train wreck

Yeah, that's either a tall tale or a reason to move or play your music at a lower volume. It must have been loud when it annoyed another young person. Take care of the eye. Layouts are easier to repair than eyes.
