Designing A Layout Based On A Single Industry

It's for this reason too that even real world examples of TimeSavers or Inglenooks are quickly learned and efficiently switched by "real world operators"... ;) Great post Fred. I think it comes down to the difference between railroad modelling, or model railroading - which is the action/verb...

    Double crossover

The diamond is indeed the "diamond" shaped part in the middle of the double cross over, above. While not always diamond shaped (tracks at 90* to each other make a square), the function is always to allow one set of tracks to cross another. They are a "problem" for the railroads in that they...

Oiling rods & drivers on brass steamers

While it is true that they don't really bear much weight (as compared with journals, for example), many steamers do use the siderods to transfer the driving force from the one powered axel to the others. There can be some slight movement back and forth, and friction may need to be overcome...

Oiling rods & drivers on brass steamers

Another option for lubing siderods is PBL Neolube. It's a graphite in suspension, and can be (carefully!) painted on. The added advantage is that it gives a darkened look to the sometimes bright metal siderods. Drawbacks include that it can be conductive, and it is extremely slippery - so watch...

The old 32 to 40 foot wood and steel reefers

Billboard type reefers were banned before WW2 basically because it was felt that the shipper was subsidizing the advertiser. E.g. If you were ABC Meat Co., would you want your meat shipped in a reefer carrying the name of XYZ Meat Co.? Wood construction was replaced by steel as per...

    Power Pack question

I think general consensus would be with you... for DC powerpacks, you really can't go wrong with MRC. They have a variety of models - including ones with momentum. How realistic/useful it is to you may require a "test drive" at your local hobby shop. ;) Andrew

    Super trees

I have read about boiling the SuperTrees in a mixture that includes glycerin to make them more resilient, and to straighten them. Can you provide any comment on these suggestions? Andrew

    Childhood train influence?

I chose "partly"... My childhood memories of trains do not really have anything to do with what I actually model, but there are a few key events that sparked my interest in general, and brought me (back) into the hobby as an adult. - I used to cross the CPR Orangeville yard tracks at least...

Next Time I Should be Patient

I think the most ironic example of this was a Model Railroader issue some tmie ago that included a scratch-build article on intermodal well cars "because there was no commercial model available". However, elsewhere in the magazine was an ad announcing such a beast...! :v8: Andrew

Has this ever happened to you?

Bob, Hate to do this to you, but the story of my last two years is very similar...! :( However, it is a hobby, and I once read something very wise about it: "The most important thing about the hobby is that it is not the most important thing." Frustrating from time to time to...

    Introducing Blade Runner

Is the rear truck powered? Steerable? It looks at least as if it pivots - are they aiming for tight radius trolley line use? Interesting looking vehicle. I wonder if rules of the road allow for passengers in trailers? I thought that was against the law at least in North America? Andrew

    Track Road Bed..

kw, If you affix your cork (or other roadbed) to the foam with adhesive or latex caulking, you can remove it later with a putty knife if necessary. Same for the cork to track interface. You only need a very thin layer - if it oozes up between the ties, it's too much... Andrew

    Shamus - Health update

Paul, Never quite sure what to say here, but will echo the others' sentiments, prayers, and best wishes for you. I will add (again, even though it's a repetition) that you are one of the main reasons for me enjoying The Gauge, making progress, and realizing the greatness of this hobby...

last night when I got home from work......

At the Smiths Falls Choclate & Railway (great combo! :thumb: ) festival two years ago, they had two CPR units (don't know which, I'm a steam guy ;)) sitting on the wye at the end of the yard. You could climb into the cab, and they allowed little kids (and not so little :)) to blow the horn...
