tortoise machine and hand made turnouts??

Don't remember the size, but I went to a larger size piano (music) wire and solved a similar problem.

    The Beginning (with NYC)

Here is a brief excerpt from "The Beginning", the second article by Bob Stierwalt for the Railroads of Madison County Memory pages. *** Beginning a career on the railroad was a dream a lot of young boys had when I was a young man, especially as a locomotive Engineer. We knew that success as...

    Leap into the Snow

He just sent me another one about his beginning on the Central. I'll get it up in a couple of days. I think that it is even better and I hope that he keeps sending them! Stories like his are getting hard to come by. :-(

    Accrurail couplers

Not exactly sure what you're looking for, but there are a couple of pages in the NMRA 'Introduction to Model Railroading' section concerning installing Kadees. http://www.nmra.org/beginner/couplers.html http://www.nmra.org/beginner/retrucking.html BTW - I have had absolutely no luck at all...

    Rivorossi

I don't understand. This is common on many steam locos and some of the older long wheelbased diesels. I know of no one who offsets their gaps. Don't you have power to both blocks from the same source? DCC may solve it, but you have some sort of wiring problem I would think.

I have sent Doc a private message and hopefully we can solve the 'contact' problem or get an address. Best laid plans and all that... :-)

    Width for HO Scale Roads?

Striping? Chart tape available at office supply stores in various sizes and colors and paint pens (got a steady hand?). I have also used an adhesive roadbed with lines already in place, but that particular brand has been out of production for several years. It's too bad about that because...

    Leap into the Snow

Here is a brief excerpt from "Leap into the Snow", the latest Memory story in the Railroads of Madison County Memory pages. "It was really winter in Indiana at that time, cold, cold, cold and a heavy snow on the ground. I reported for duty at the prescribed time, late in the evening and was...

    Width for HO Scale Roads?

Your county road info is at the bottom. Here is a guide that I use for streets and roads. Here in Anderson Indiana, each lane was about 12 feet wide. It was dependent upon the type of roadway (main street, residential or back country road, etc) but most business streets and highways were...

    New York Central fans

I am a Central buff, but I won't get into this. That paper will most likely end in a drawer to be tossed out later and be lost forever rather than being displayed or preserved in a the NYCSHS historical society where it can be researched. That's the way of these things. My opinion only. Your...

    Tortoise & Power

I use a 9v 500ma AC Adapter – Radio Shack 273-1651D to supply power for my home made Torty and LED power supplies. I drive my LEDs at just short of 4v DC and the Torties at about 7v. This produces a great slow motion and I have never had any problems with either the LEDs or the Torties. I have...

    Model Railroading for Dummies

Well, you can get much of that info on the NMRA's 'Introduction to Model Railroading' pages at http://www.nmra.org/beginner/ As for nomenclature of steam vs diesel, that's another kettle of fish. The NMRA does have a CD, the InfoPak, that covers a lot of that (it's a cost item), but I know of...

    Keep or Sell?

You should retruck and add Kadee's if you want to keep them. There is an article on the NMRA Beginner's pages about just exactly that. Retrucking old r-t-r cars - http://www.nmra.org/beginner/retrucking.html

Yes, that is an Athearn. It followed their rubber band drive and was the first iteration toward their modern drive line.

    am i wrong

Briefly, I have no intention of going to DCC. I have a mature layout with a number of older locos. That said, for someone building a new layout, I highly recommend DCC. I have used it on a friends layout and am very impressed. You can get a system for simple needs on up. As for the railroad...

Are the pins on my Kadee's really needed?

It's your railroad. You can do what you wish. They are designed for use with uncoupling ramps and magnets. If you don't use them, cut at will. As for me, I adjust them with the Kadee coupler gauge to the proper height and keep them. Ugly is in the eye of the beholder.

    Trying to resurrect old set

For the most part, the older locos aren't nearly as good as the newer ones. I have several that I put back into operation, but not to run very often. An Athearn rubber band drive makes a very nice shelf display. Ah, but the cars may be very neat. Most would probably benefit from new trucks...

    A couple simple questions

No 'controller' necessary, Just use a toggle switch to turn the siding on and off. You break the circuit to the siding with insulating rail joiners and run the power through the toggle switch. In my case, I use a dpdt center off switch to permit me to reverse the siding in relation to the...
