    Broadway Limited derails-----

We are running a BLI Mikado on 18" radius EZ track in a Christmas display. We had derailment problems until we moved the tender back to the second hole allowing more play between the engine and tender. We've has no derailments since except when a kid tried to push it around the track. The clue...

    Life-like or Bachmann train set?

In my experience, if you are going to do a 'Train Set' starter, then go with the Bachmann over the Life Like. Yes, Athearn is better, but the Bachmann is better than the Life Like no matter what accessories come with the sets and the Athearn is better than either, but does require a little more...

    Defective Turnout?

A plastic frog? If it's really a number 6 turnout with a plastic frog, then short wheelbase locos with limited pickup will stall there. A four axle loco with all wheel pickup should go right through with no problems.

    Nkp 587

Here is the NKP 587 that I caught at Alexandria Indiana on June 29, 1991 as it leads an excursion train. The 587 served the Nickel Plate for years, retired to an Indianapolis park, was returned to steam by the Indiana Transportation Museum and is currently out of service at the museum. She...

    Rebuilding old models

I did some slide cataloging work for a local county historical society when I was shown three boxes of O scale traction models that they had been given. Most of the models in the boxes were never finished and could easily be called parts. However, there were a number that had been completed but...

Rolling stock - is there a front and rear end?

There is the A end and the B end. The B end is where the brake wheel is. No, railroads do not align them. 'Neatness and originally' do not count when moving the freight. :) However, that said, there are time when a car must be spotted with a particular side toward the dock or unloading ramp...

But is there anything we can do to show trains to younger people. Remember that they do see Thomas the Tank Engine...

    505, South Anderson

Railroad wise, how fortunate we are here in Central Indiana. This weekend I went to Cleveland Ohio and back. Going, I went via Dayton and Columbus and up and returning, I came down to Mansfield and across US30 to I-69 and down. In all that time, I never even heard a train and saw only one parked...

    Motor Mounting

Silicone Adhesive Caulk. I have used this several times with complete success. Mere caulk isn't really enough. You need the adhesive version.

    NMRA Scratchbuild Showcase

Just a reminder about the NMRA Scratchbuild Showcase/Kitbash Korner on the NMRA web site at: http://www.nmra.org/ (scroll down the home page toward the bottom). This is a photo album with short descriptions of various projects that modelers have put together. There are a number of neat...

    Need Help South Bend area

I received a call from John a few minutes ago asking for help contacting a railfan somewhere in or near South Bend. If you can't help, do you know someone who could. *** This is John Dobberstein, I'm a reporter at the South Bend Tribune. I am trying to reach people in the South Bend area who...

    local railroad modellers???

I have a little more time now, so... I really think that most of us model the 'railroad' we are or were near. That doesn't mean that we model the specific prototype like the NYC, PC, CR or NS. We model the railroad, not the company. Model railroading is one way of preserving the past. We...

    local railroad modellers???

Short answer, yes. Doesn't everyone? :) Longer answer, my ECI (East Central Indiana) railroad is free-lanced based on local trackage and trackage in a small town that I spent my summers in. When I looked into it, I found that one of the lines running by my current residence actually was the...

    Couplers

Now, all of the above said, the NMRA 'Introduction to Model Railroading' pages have a couple of articles on couplers and re-trucking train set cars that might be of interest to you. I have a few older train set cars running on my ECI either because I like them or they represent a prototype...

Corning Branch, Syracuse Division, NYC story

Here is a brief excerpt from "Corning Branch, Syracuse Division, NYC", another article by Bob Stierwalt for the Railroads of Madison County Memory pages. *** This happened on a warm summer day in 1965 on the Corning Branch of the Syracuse Division of the New York Central railroad. Corning...
