Scott......I have enjoyed visiting your website over the last year or so.......and now it's nice to see you made it to Great Model Railroads 2004.......excellent work.
I just ordered one today. I was looking for something simple and easy to do with my kids (3 1/2 and 7) this winter. I will ordered the needed track next week. As for the other things needed, I already have a decent collection of stuff. The only modification will be the mountians will be covered...
From a different perspective.......I like EMD's as opposed to GE's.
When I work the yard I prefer a nice six axle SD50 or SD40-2 especially on drag jobs. GE's are terrible in this respect because they are slow to load and slow to stop.
On the road I will take an SD60, SD70AC and on a few...
Yeah I was just down at Disneyworld with the kids. The monorail was about $60.00 and is battery operated. My 3 yr old son decided on the Buzz Lightyear space ship and fugure instead of the monorail :p
Positive Train Control is being tested.......this of course will result in more job losses. The carriers won't be happy until all trains can be run either Jacksonville, Norfolk, Omaha or Ft. Worth via GPS and no crews at all.
With the continued downsizing of crew consists and selling off of jobs by the UTU......coupled with the inability of running steam via remote control and emission standards in various states.....well you won't see steam on the rails except for excursion trips.
The newer Tropicana reefers have GPS tracking. Which doesn't really mean much where I work since they have a whole train dedicated to hauling orange juice.
I have had a few close calls. Unfortunately it's not a case of if but when. One guy who had about five accidents in his career gave me one piece of advise.......he said "never look at them in the eyes.
If you know it's too late.....just look away."
The meltdown of '97-'98 affected the whole UP system and yes it started in Houston and spread quickly. Mainlines and sidings became parking lots with crews sitting on the trains for 12 plus hours and not moving an inch. in some cases the same crews sat on the same trains after being rested and...
Most cars roaming the country today are in pool service. Cars are kept track of by the railroads. They are tracked by where they are loaded, interchanged, switched out and delivered. Just about every yard that I have been to has a "camera" outside the limits of those yards. As the train passes...
It has been going on in that area for quite awhile. The area roughly from Olney to Langhorne Pa. always has something on the tracks ranging from old hot water heaters to shopping carts.
It always makes for an interesting trip through the area.
Anyone ever build one of these?
I was thinking about doing one with my kids
and was hoping it was something simple that
little hands as well as my big old hands can do.
I was thinking about the High Sierra layout.
Any comments or suggestions?
Thanks
Actually I was thinking more of a twice around type layout. I would like to use the middle of the layout for trackage. Basically I want a longer run......but Trainmasta......I do like the image you posted because it incorporates a diamond.
