The old 32 to 40 foot wood and steel reefers

Did these reefers actually carry the product that was represented on the Billboard or was it just advertising like on rural barns ?

Mountainman, Ido have a ice house and the necessary raised ramps to load car with ice. Just no where to place them on the layout.

* At times they didn't. You were allowed to advertise wherever you paid to put your advertisement, if it was deemed appropriate by the community the add was placed in. Advertising on the railroads was different it seams. I know if you own the car you can paint you company's name on it.

Perhaps an interesting aside associated with the preceeding post is that, upon the first appearance of a Wescott & Winks reefer in HO many many moons ago and for a long time thereafter, a great many model railroaders mistakenly believed that the "Wescott" in the car's lettering scheme was meant as a mispelled reference to, or in homage of, Linn Westcott, famed model railroading guru and longtime editor of Model Railroader Magazine.

The WWDX reporting marks in fact do corresponded to the real Wescott & Winks Dairy Products company.

RE Westcott & Winks

The three W&W reefers are Athearn cars I painted and lettered using decals. I used a Microscale sets. In the two their was enough for seven cars.
87-167 Ice reefers, Wescott and Winks, Land O' Lakes, White Rock.
87-174 Old Time Billboard reefers, Westcott and Winks,

Thanks for the info Frank. You have done a fantastic job on those. I did find some of the W&W cars by Branchline,Atlas & Athearn on some Modeling Websites. I like your idea of building them yourself. I did find the decals from Microscale & will be placing a large order. Do you use prorotype colors for your cars? & also what brand if any of solvaset & dulcote do you use. I will be posting some pics of my Maple Valley Logging & Millwork project soon & you can see the problem I'm having with decals. I made my own Logo & Sign but did not like the dullcote, it actually made it shine more. Thanks for the help & once again very nice job & a very fine collection.

THe W&W reefers should have been white and brown. I used a light gray. I had seen gray used on other reefers and tried it.

I have seen the white but I like the gray better also. Are you using undecorated cars? I haven't found any UD cars that I like yet. I might just go ahead & get some with very little graphics, strip, paint & detail them.

RE Reefers

Jim I used the athearn because you don't have to mask off anything, so you can do them faster. The roof and ends are one part so you just paint it one color. The sides and bottom are the other main part and you paint the sides the other color.

Carstens Refrigerator Line

This group seems to have a huge interest in billboard reefers. I am looking for information on the Carstens 34 foot reefer, it had brown sides, an off set door on the side and lettering that said "White Snow Shortening". Can any one help me?

Frank, thanks for the reply. Funny you mention Clover House 'cause that's were I got the idea, saw it in his catalog. I've purchased many HO scale rub off's from Clover House to make many of my cars but there is some information lacking to complete a car. What I was wanting to know was the postion of the ice hatches. With the off set door they could be placed other than the usual position at the ends. The Colorado & Midland ( Hanrahan ) reefer is a good example of hatches in a different position. Maybe somebody will point me in the right direction. John

Well, I think the metal reefers are insulated better, therefore keeping the load cold longer. But their looks would improve dramatically with these paint schemes.

Quite the opposite.

The wood cars had a higher insulation rating than the steel cars. Wooden cars did require higher maintenance though.

Eastman Heater Car

Sorry to move away from the color of the billboard reefers but here is another car similar to the one in the previous post. This car is an earlier version appearing about 1900. It had a kerosene heater to keep produce and dairy products from freezing. The virtual model was made in 2007 using Art Griffin's decals. I took the screen shot as the car passes through St Thomas Ontario. BTW, St Thomas is where JUMBO ( a Barnum & Bailey circus elephant) was crushed by a locomotive in a marshalling yard. St Thomas erected a live size statue of JUMBO and it still exists today. John

John : Your modeling is at a level more prototypical than I do. While you are getting into type of hatches and exact location, I am just glad that I still have a hatch and it didn't fall off and get lost. As to type the only manufacture that has different hatches that I know is Branchline. They only make one type of wood reefer. Most of the time they woun't be prototypical either. Wood reefers were made in to many different sizes. So you'll have the right hatch but your car will be to big or small somewhere.
Good luck with your projects. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Thanks Frank. I'll add some color back the this tread. The screen shot shows a Colorado & Midland reefer with the hatches in the middle. That's why I am concerned with the placement of hatches on the Carstens reefer I plan to make. I'll keep searching and may yet find the answer to my question. John
