pepakura designer

I will try to show principal procedures of how to use pepakura designer.

let's start with metasequoia - I removed all except of the head, to have a reasonable count of parts

first atempt to unfold - horrible

0002.jpg

first I removed the texture, so moving and rotating the model with the mouse is much faster.
then I defined the cut lines - these (brown) lines will be pre-cut by pepakure all others (blue)
are folding lines, which will produce folding edges on the end. the actual selection is green.

all of them

0007.jpg

the second try - the result is much more reasonable :)

0008.jpg

the parts might be cut and rejoined - pepakura tracks which parts are involved - so it is relatively easy

mark the edge and click cut it

0009.jpg

parts can be rotated around any point interactively - first mark the center of rotation and then pick another point and ...

0010.jpg

rotate it

0011.jpg

move it

0012.jpg

mark an edge - papakure will find the other edge -

0013.jpg

and join

0014.jpg

after several minutes you will have the new unfold result

0015.jpg

now fine tuning with the flaps - again, pepakure knows about both edges of a connection -

0016.jpg

mark the edge and choose the side of the flap

0017.jpg

the result - ready for test build

the 3d result (glue still wet when picture was taken :-D )

Thank you so much rkelterer for reposting this! :D
But a few points I might add:

"First atempt to unfold - horrible"
- yeah, that sums up where I am currently with Pepakura. :(

"first I removed the texture - that is faster - then I defined the cut lines"
- any chance you can explain this more (cut lines), its kinda like that painting show with the dude with the afro "a few swipes of my brush and bravo! we have realistic looking trees" it leaves me confused. ;)

Many thanks,
Keith

hi keith,

sorry about the very short comments 8) I tried to update that with the cut lines (please see there). if you purchased papakura designer try to practice with the simple samples. pepakura designer is a virtual cutting mat where you do not have to keep track of the connect information - the designer will help you to find edges as well as flaps. no magic at all
