Ok, here goes...

I work as a 2-tone masker at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.

After hearing about my "little" hobby, my manager has asked me if I would be willing/able to build a large model of one of the cars. I said I would like to give it a go as this is something I have been thinking about myself.

To cut a long story short, we got the 3d model transferred to my pc and simplified to a standard that I could work with.

We also decided on a 2-tone car in Arctic White and Twilight Purple.

So far I have arranged parts for the bonnet and front bumper. I have also started a rough test build of the bonnet.

The final model will be just over 1.1 metres in length.

More to come soon. :)

Picture upload doesn't seem to be working, I will post some when it is back up.

UPDATE:

**Part way through creating this thread, there was an incident which caused some images to be lost.
I have done my best to re-incorporate as many as I can back into the correct places.
Unfortunately some of the images now exceed the file size limit and have had to be re-sized. **

That's going to be some project. You may have to "wet mold" some of the paper to get those curves. :)

It will definitely be "fun".
Zathros, wet moulding may well be an advantage but I'll need some practice as I've not done it before.

I separated the parts into individual files for export, then loaded the bonnet into pepakura to begin arranging the template layout.

The last picture is a semi-final layout after rearranging.

Next comes the test build of the bonnet to see if / how it would all fit together.

Please bear in mind that this is a test and the final model will be of better quality. ;)

I have got a little further with this but it's not quite finished. Also I have integrated another part to raise the heat shielding (the big black bit) on the underside to give it more relief.

Will they be allowing you to share this model? It's a blast just seeing you make it!! Just curious. ;)

The design of the car is common knowledge and lots of people have reproduced it in cg models already so I cannot see a problem. I will double check just to be sure.

Also while I'm here, the texturing inside...

Not sure how many of the switches will be buildable but I'm going to give them a go. ;)

A lot of those switches can be made by lightly punching the back of the paper with a toothpick filed down (or other rod shaped tool) the diameter you need, against a firm but hard surface, like your cutting board. This will raise the button on the front panel, and give you the desired texture. You can do this with thin normal printer paper, then when done, glue that sheet onto the actual dash, and you will have your textured dash. You'll have to try a few methods to get the feel for it, but it works, and for many other features too. :)

Nice work so far.
I am wery courious how detailed this model will be. 1,1m long model needs lot of details. I have absolutely zero experience with big models so following this thread will be great learning experience for me. What paper do you use?

I'm planning on doing the interior and having the bonnet open to show the engine. I've not really done any big projects like this so it's a learning curve for me and I may need to call on the community at times. I'm hoping to use around 180gsm for the structural bits and maybe about 120 for the finer stuff. I may need to go lower for the really fiddly bits, but we'll see when the time comes.
