Wow, I think that is amazing, and you haven't even added any texture!! I think you won't have any problem whatsoever making a convincing, and the ONLY model of this craft I have ever seen. It would be hard to beat too, in paper. I think it's excellent!! :)

Thanks for links, that german forum model looks like it has interchangeable left "arm", which is the difference between first and second movie, (ship was damaged by lava in Aliens), I was thinking about this option for a while.
As you can see, I'm using Giger's painting for the basic shape and adding details from here and there, there is a lack of some good shots of the studio model from some angles.
Also, what about the pilot's chamber, that clear dome is tricky... :/

First prototype layout ideas:

You sir are awesome! Not only have you shown you are an incredible designer with an unparalleled handling of textures with your version of the Betty, but you have great taste in your selection of subject matter. It's really cool seeing models that not only have not been done, but ones that it never occurred to most to even do. Two big, fat thumbs way up high!

THIS IS FREAKIN' FANTASTIC!!!! :) :) :)

As for references: There are a few pictures of the original studio model in the google link I posted. There is also a great Alien blogspot site which has a few good pics I haven't seen before:

One tip: Use a higher edge count on the base. SketchUp uses a default value of 24 edges. I double or triple the amount to achieve a nice rounded surface. Trust me, I once did use the default value on a base of about 25 cm in diameter; and it showed (badly) :( .

Revell-Fan: Thanks, that blog is my main source for this project, there are lots of shots from the "movie-seen" angle, but no shots from the other side, so I improvised from other models here.
Well, yes, I'm using higher number, as well as lower ones, that pictures are not actual, they were made just for some quick sketch of the basic layout. I'm reworking a lots of parts now I'm not satisfied with.
This is actual picture:

Big thumbsup! :)

(BTW, an internal skeleton seems necessary, too. ;) )

OUTSTANDING!!! :Bravo:

I would add some weathering (a few brown spots), either now or after unfolding on the flattened pattern.

Well, this is just a test, I'm happy that I can apply continual texture in SketchUp with "projection trick", but there are some warped areas anyway, Photoshop will be needed after unfolding to add some details, of course. It is very complicated shape to texture it in one piece, I've tried to paint the model in Photoshop in 3D, but it was horrible. It's time to learn some new software, maybe... ;)
