How do I do Stuff for Card Modeling Questions. UV's and Software like Rhino or Blender, Pepakura or Help me before I pull all my Hair out Thread!!

Pulling the chatter from Vorchan thread over hear as it is getting cluttered up with a lot of GREAT questions and Answers as well as examples, but they just don't belong there. and continuing from ..

If you were following then you have seen some of the problems and answers that have been kicked around, so far no real solutions ( at least for what I am doing ) on the best way to unfold a model with photo-real textures ( or close to it ).

Here is a VERY simple truck model... it is the textures that give it all of it's realism.
Zis5Tanker.jpg
Zis5TankerCab.jpg
Zis5TankerUV.jpg this is even the UV shot in Rhino of the storage tank. Trouble is when flattened it will just not use the texture! even flattened and and UV assigned to original mesh and everything looks great, part will display garbage. So this is the concept of this thread... to ask , answer and help all those who have problems or questions of this nature and keep them in a controlled area!

I know I am guilty as charged, threads are full of my own rambling that are OFF Topic! But I will try to do better!!;)

I am convinced that Rhino Texturing just plain sucks. As I wrote in an earlier thread, I live marks of boundaries, making them separate parts, even if they look like one, and then texture parts unrolled. This doesn't get the same results as one would get with an unrolled texture, but with careful attention does work. I haven't seen an off topic thread from you yet, and sometimes incorporating aspects of modeling that are a bit circuitous adds flavor to the thread. :)

Hmm... What about exporting the unfolded pattern and then texturing it in a graphic program?

BTW, @Martin Saenger uses Rhino, too. Maybe he can give you some tips. ;)

That is a solution ( such as in the example above ) ie. when it is a simple mesh, but when the mesh is complicated and when in rhino you have to reassemble the "parts" for what - ever reason then I find it very difficult to figure out what parts I am looking at anymore.

If the Unfolded result was like this, which is the UV data of the tanker, things are easy. ( I really do not understand WHY an unfolded model should not be more like this, there is really no reason for it that some computation/math could not overcome!)
Tanker-UV.jpg
then the mesh is easy to understand and the parts could and can be painted in an outside program,
Tanker-UV-Painted.jpg
I have done it tons of times... but only on simple meshes.
I am not going to get into what Rhino does to UV's at this point as it seems that it will be up to the end-user to come up to their own solution, as they are moving in a different direction from where I wish to take the program!
But when the same area is unfolded you end up with something like this,
Tanker-Poly-Flat.jpg
I have not rearranged the parts but that can be done and you will end up with something that approximates what you see in the UV image. Along the lines of a Pepakura but all the parts are still connected, but will have to be textured in an outside program.
Pepakura is also a mess but easy to overcome, and maintains the texture image, but only works with triangulated meshes, if it worked with quads it would produce a far superior model

If Pepakura could make a circle, that would be a great improvement!! Ever notice how if you move the part around, the Texture stays still, as the part moves. You see this if you apply a shiny texture that has a reflective surface, or a wood texture. Trying to get the grain of the wood to match the direction you wish becomes rather difficult too. The U.V. Editor also seems to be completely unrelated to anything happening in Rhino. Once unrolled, the textures can be applied, but nothing like the weathering done in Photoshop. One of these days I am going to have to spend more than 5 minutes on this. I keep getting sidelined with my real vehicles, and now it's time to get my Suzuki ready for the Summer. :)
