casting resin parts.

in the model train scratching and bashing section I have a thread called time to build Union Station. I cut window and door shapes out of plastic, and then made moulds and resin copies for the build with one of the resid casting kits from Hobby Lobby. I have a bunch of HOn3 ore cars I want to make, and likely that will be done with resin. I have scratchbuilt four out of wood, and have wood cut for another four. I eventually want to make a boat load of them, so one of the wooden cars will likely be sued to make a form for a rubber mould for mass producing them from resin.

That thread is masterful! Your work on the station was fantastic. If this section takes off, you may find yourself being sought for needed advice! :)

Thank you. the door frame castings for the Union Station have no doors in them. I have made some masters for a mold for the doors to fit the door openings, but have not made the molds yet. I have found that the casting resin, once it is opened has a limited shelf life. the doors won't rake much resin, and I don't want to waste the bottle, so I'm putting off making the doors until I have something else to cast so the resin won't be wasted.

One possibility is an HOn3 Tweetsie ore car. I have scratchbuilt four out of wood, and have enough wood pre cut to make another four I have thought of using the material needed to make one of those wood cars, to make masters for resin parts, so I could make a boat load of these cars. the cars are available as a comercial kit, but cost close to $25.00 a pop without trucks and couplers, which would push the total cost per car over $35.00 a car. I'd like to have 30-40 of these cars eventually, so casting the cars would be the way to go, saving money, and build time. since I'm busy rebuilding my RR, I might not get to this soon, but when I do I'll document it step by step like a tutorial, as I try to do with most of my stuff.

That would make for a great tutorial, zipped up and put into the resource section, as well as in the forum. It's nice to have this info offline when you need it. It would be good to name the brands you use, it isn't a plug as much as what you use and trust. :)
