I managed to grab a piece of Brass 1/16th thick, 14" wide, and 16 feet long!! It still has cosmoline on the outside. I do not know why this person put this valuable piece of Brass stock in the metal bin, but it's in my machine shop, and I probably will be making the dashboard of my '73 MG Midget out of it, surrounded by wood trim. A friend offered me $200 bucks for it. I smiled at him, and said, "No Thanks". Brass is so pretty, and patinas so well. :)

This is my most recent project. Was following an auction, but was going to be on the road in rural Texas when the auction ended, so I put #1 son on the auction.

He won the auction , said he went over my limit, wouldn’t tell me how much; said it did not matter because it was my birthday present.

I remotored it, replaced the drive shaft with a nice one from A-Line; and added electrical pick up to the insulated drivers and tender wheels.

I painted it fancy, because it suited the locomotive, and as practice for a future project.F8AF4277-209A-4008-BE63-19EB70ECF79A.jpeg

Hey swampy, I haven't even test run it yet. I want it to run, but know that won't make it go. Yep, when I saw it I knew I couldn't get it. Got to talkin trains with the dealer in a friendly manner all about trains. He being slightly younger than myself said he was selling his father's trains I guess along with his own. I told him about what I do and my son's interest in trains, and his layout, never asking or mentioning a price or even getting back to the subject of the Nigara for a loco like that was beyond me, then He says, I can give it to you for 100. That I had mainly because of the need to make change. I also know you can't even buy a new diesel loco for that price. I think he knew and was happy that his father's train was going to my son in the not too distant future and this train would go from father to son, and father to son. Kinda like thing should be.

I have always found a genuine heart to heart conversation can either just get you a nice conversation, with is worth much in itself, or lead to goodies like this. I got my milling machine like that. A guy cleaned out the basement of a guy who made Porsche Racing gears with it, mostly broaching, The guy completely dissembled it, not knowing what it was. The metal guy at the Transfer Station (read Dump) offered him a case of beer for it. I told him what he actually had, and got so pissed at the other guy, he gave it to me for $200 bucks. He called me a few hours, to ask me if I would come over and take the rest of it. A Hilma indexing head (around $2500 new), a rotary milling head, stand up, or lay down type, a complete set of Starret Micrometers, up to 4 inches, boxes of end mills, drills, taps, and 4, 2 inch throw, .2" faced, 0001" Dial indicators, and two that measured in 10th's of a thousandths of an inch. Much more, too much to list. I told him I felt like I was ripping him off,he said I was the only honest person up there. This milling machine saw very little use. I have made many things with it. He told me he was going to put it his back yard with a tarp over it. I told him, the next morning, the surface rust would have killed the machine. Being nice pays off in many many ways. :)

A smaller Brass old time 2-8-0 the Ma and Pa (Maryland & Pennsylvania) has been released by 3 or 4 different companies Ho Train Co, Gem Akane Pacific Fast Mail. All appear to be made by the same manufacture in Japan. Mine didn't have a box to give it a importers name, so i'll call mine a Akane version. My son painted and lettered it for me.
