The Ohio Western (First "Real" Layout)

Hey all. I just wanted to post some photos of the new layout I'm building. It's build on a 32"x80" door with 1" of foam board on top. I'm using the "Carolina Central" trackplan from Model Railroader.
So far all the track is laid on the foam and the roadbed (WS Trackbed) will be laid this weekend. I've also started building the view blocking ridge.

Looking good so far. I like it. As I am not familiar with that plan, is there any way you can post it... even if it's just a rough sketch?
 
I like it! Much further along than my layout (haven't even laid the foam down!:eek::p) We also curently share one thing in common: we both have freelanced railroads and only have one engine in their scheme!:mrgreen: However, now that you have posted the pics, according to The Gauge rules, you must now continue posting pics of your progress! (Not really, but please do anyways, we LOVE seeing other's work!:mrgreen::mrgreen::thumb:)
 
I'd like to use the mine, but I also want to include a town and you don't see many coal mines next door to towns. I'm thinking of a small factory or mill.

Have you thought about using a divider in the middle of your layout diagonaly? Model Railroader had some promotional book on how easy it was to become a model railroader, and they had some sample layout plans with dividers with them.

coal mines werent just NEXT to towns,most of the time the mine owned them! mines started company towns with a general store,movie theater,doctor,etc so that there workers were within walking distance of the mine.now the town is kinda rural BUT a town with all the bells and whistles none the less.just google it,it will be more complete than my post is.--josh
 
If you do keep the mine, I'd suggest that you not downsize it. One advantage to N Scale is that one can have buildings that should be substantial in real life, like industries and mines.

A company town would certainly work next to the mine.
 
Ohio Western is doesn't refer to the locale of the railroad. The OW is my freelanced modern railroad. Ohio Western is just a combination of names like Norfolk Southern. I'm from southwest Ohio originally, and you're right, it's not coal country.

My original thought for a name was Great Lakes and Ohio Western Railway, but the acronym for that would have been G.L.O.W. :)
 
That's the New River Mining Co., Right? You know, you could say that it's NOT a coal mine, maybe the mine is an ore mine or something. With freelanced railroads, anything goes.
 
I have all of the roadbed laid down and the track affixed to it. Well, all but one section of flextrack that keeps getting on my nerves. I'll post photos later when I get a chance.
 
I just did some work this week. Ballast and painting the rails.
First I laid Woodland Scenics Track Bed on the centerline of the track, gluing it in place and using thumbtacks to hold it for a couple days. Then I laid track on top with glue and thumbtacks until the glue dried.

I painted the rails with Testors Flat Black spray paint, wiping off the tops of the rails with a thinner soaked towel.

Because I'm anal retentive, I've changed some things up a bit. I've added a coal mine surrounded by a hill and I might replace the factory shown in the photos with something less modern in case I want to back date the layout. Also, any advice on what to use for water is helpful. I'll be starting the river soon.
