While I was doing research for Ausien's Gauge car, I came across these pics.
Maybe our friends"Down Under" can help.
Whats up with this?
These were mounted under a "louvered van"

I think it has something to do with maintenance of way. I have seen sort of cars also here in Germany. In contrast to the US, rails in Europe for example are not secured on the ties with nails but with screws and holding plates. Modern track work machines are full automated, but for safety reasons, one or two workers must retorque the screws while sitting on this seat...

I have no image yet, but i will post one if i find one...

It does look like whoever is in the seat has some control over what comes out of those chutes. Ballast maybe? What else, looks like there's some spill below the one chute...

Still, it looks like a fun job..

I didn´t found an image yet, but a friend told me, that the worker who is sitting there could also collect the screws and holding plates...
